i've seen Kathy's black & white rendition of the pattern in person. it's even prettier up close. and quite snuggly for lazy days on the couch. :-)

the pattern is one of my originals, named Surprise Party. it feels wrong somehow to piggy-back an "advertisement" on this gorgeous post but ... i do offer it for sale.

It has great placement of the lights and darks. So I am sure it looks wonderful in person

flannel will not pill if you pre wash it using a cap full of hair conditioner

A high quality flannel froma quilt shop will be soft after lots of washings. I made a flannel throw for my DH to use while he watching the race with his eyes shut. It is used a lot and is still soft.

you could try minkie or velour instead of the flannel. they are nice and soft and stay looking nice.

Good looking. I have corderoy for my lap quilt's backing and I love that feel. I have also used brushed denim for the feel of flannel without the pilling.
