Those Christmas blocks look like the start of a Lone Star, done in strips, which need trimming to finish up the diamond shape. Eight is the number it takes to make it.

That is collection is absolutely fabulous - - - and also, thank you Sparkys_Mom for the mention of the book "Setting Solutions" - - that is great. I looked at preview on Amazon and thinking of getting it.

I'll try to photograph more of them later, but I have more sorting and pressing to do first.
They could be left over from a project or if the lady belongs to a guild they could come from there, I have heard of guilds where everyone in the guild gives you a block on your birthday made from colors and designs you have requested. My guild has something we call a monthly lottery block, at the business meeting each month everyone is given a pattern and colors to make a block and then those who make a block get their name put into a pot and the winner get all the blocks made for that month depending on how many people made blocks you can end up with any where from 5 to 20 blocks. Some months I have won and really didn't want to do anything with those blocks so they sit in a drawer waiting for me to come up with an idea.

I think batiks hold up well to washing so using them shouldn't be a problem. They might fade some, but that will only add to their charm. I agree that having a design wall/flannel backed tablecloth to play with them on is going to be very helpful in planning for using the blocks. I would also not make any strip blocks until after using up the pre-made blocks as you might need the scraps for sashing, etc. in setting them. Also, there is nothing that says you can't use non-batiks for setting these blocks! Some of them would look great with some tone on tone white or other light colors between the blocks.
