I too like the added blue border between the cat ears and the outer border. The fishies are great also. It would be awesome if you could find a design for mice in the border instead of fish though.

I looked for a pattern for mice and didn't find one that would be easy to put together. Maybe I'll make my own!

Those fish are perfect! And such a simple pattern and fits in well with the kitties.

Whatever you decide, I'm sure the little girl will love it.

BTW, if you choose the fish blocks, you could use a decorative stitch for the fish eyes and not worry about a button popping off later.

There is a link to a very rough draft of the pattern for the fishes border quilt. Exported from EQ7, so no explicit piecing instructions are included. However, I have included a copy of the original pattern, which does include piecing instructions.
