This is the color idea from the pattern (sort of)

But, I went kayaking again this morning and there are way way way more darks than lights out there--the lights are from shallow water and sun streaking through all the way to the bottom... and it's mostly greens! And that's when one happens to be looking down. If the gaze is across the top--it's dark and more uniform.

so...based on my research, I made a change....

One more comparison before you tell me you love it! (You do love it, right?) I think the original flows into the circular effect better because our eyes are drawn to the diamond shapes created form the triangles and in the new one a star pops out--but the new idea is more...well, lake like.

Lacelady 07-30-2009 01:09 PM

It's looking good, but I am willing to bet that every time you look at that lake, it will be a different set of colours, because of the reflections from the sky, and how the weather changes, so don't discard those blocks that are slightly more green yet, you might still want to use them later.

barnbum 07-30-2009 01:12 PM

Oh I didn't discard them--I changed the corner triangles.

Oh, the lake is always different--that's true--but it's always darker than the lights in the first try.

I think I'll still make one the other way, too....wouldn't want all those cute little 45 degree triangles going to waste!

chickadee_42us 07-30-2009 01:13 PM

Yep, I like the new one.

Sugarpumpkin 07-30-2009 01:19 PM

I definitely like the new one better...and I agree..its more kayak like!

Jim's Gem 07-30-2009 01:39 PM

I think I like the new one better too.

Bevanger 07-30-2009 01:53 PM

i love it. so pretty :D

katier825 07-30-2009 02:01 PM

I think you are right, the new one looks better! That sure is going to be a pretty quilt! :)

Kyiav10 07-30-2009 02:05 PM

That is looking good Karla!!

Kyia

gaigai 07-30-2009 03:52 PM

I like both of them, but for different reasons. I would probably use both of them together!! But that's just me, and I've absolutely loved everything you've done to date, so go for it!!

Shemjo 07-30-2009 04:39 PM

In your original, the kayaks are the dark shape, and in your new one, the kayaks are the light shape, right?
The second one makes my eyes see curves, or round shapes. I LOVE them both!

barnbum 07-30-2009 04:42 PM

Well--I'm thinking it's more the kayaker's view--rather than the kayak... but I see what you're talking about.

quiltluvr 07-30-2009 04:48 PM

Your blocks are on the money! The colors are just right.

Just to help the way I'm visualizing what you're saying, you're going from blues to greens, like transitioning colors?

barnbum 07-30-2009 04:54 PM

Well--maybe... the idea on that changed when I changed the quilt colors... but I'm going to see what I can do... I'm still going to attempt it. I'm getting all the darker small triangles cut now... then I'll strategize.

I noticed how light it was where I launched today--exactly what I want to try.

tlrnhi 07-30-2009 04:57 PM

I like them both ways, but then again....what do I know.? ;)

barnbum 07-30-2009 05:21 PM

I do too, Terri...

sandpat 07-30-2009 05:25 PM

I like them both also and would probably do 2 quilts...1 with the original thought and then another....you do have just tons of time, don't you Karla??

barnbum 07-30-2009 05:35 PM

sandpat--

Actually--since it is summer... I have a few more weeks before I have to start getting my room ready.... but those horses need work and the weeds grew in the garden again and my kayak is calling me.... :D

Funny...I seem to know that feeling! I really like what you are playing with though...oh..I mean the quilt, but I like your other playthings too!

Marcia 07-30-2009 05:58 PM

Karla---I do like them both---but I think you are right on the money for your lake effect with the second set of blocks. This is going to be gorgeous--I cannot wait to see more.

Esqmommy 07-30-2009 06:01 PM

Oh ya - you chose beautiful colors - it does look like water. This is turning out so pretty!

Jim's Gem 07-30-2009 07:57 PM

Karla, is this pattern from the August 2009 issue of McCalls quilting magazine?
I have that issue sitting in front of me and it really looks like what you are doing? That one is called Shadows on the Pond.

It is going to be a gorgeous quilt!!!

amma 07-30-2009 08:20 PM

The one on the right speaks all water to me...the one on the left is water, shoreline and a few plants :D :D :D

Karla, is this pattern from the August 2009 issue of McCalls quilting magazine?
Yup--that's the one!! I had mentioned that in the post about buying fabrics...

See how the corner triangles are light and sewn on lights? I just cut darks, and sewed them on darks....

Me too--amma!

reneebobby 07-31-2009 02:49 AM

I love them both maybe put the lights in the one corner and go fade into the darks at the other end. Either way it's going to be spectacular.

Quilt4u 07-31-2009 02:54 AM

I love them both. There is no wrong way.

bearpaw 07-31-2009 03:36 AM

I really like them both, the fabrics are beautiful! The circle seems to pop out more on the first set, while the star pops out more on the second. I can't decide which I like better!

Bill'sBonBon 07-31-2009 10:57 AM

I like them both. But the Blue star is AWESOME!!!

Boston1954 07-31-2009 11:12 AM

I was going to say I liked the first one better until I saw them next to each other. You are right. The "bluer" one is better.

JeanDal 08-04-2009 11:42 AM

I agree with LaceLady. Water changes colors all the time. And yes I like it.

alaskasunshine 08-04-2009 12:19 PM

Wow I love your fabrics!!!!!!! I love the 1st one, cuz I see the Kayak's too. That was the first thing I noticed, but hey they are both beautiful. If I were doing the quilt the 2nd way I'd call it "Kayaking in the Evening, Under the Stars"
What ever you do will for sure be strikingly beautiful! Of that I am certain.

jbsstrawberry 08-04-2009 12:27 PM

I like them both too...I'm no help to ya either. Whichever...I know you'll make it beautiful, you always do  Keep us updated, often!! :D

barnbum 08-04-2009 03:29 PM

Thanks so much for your kind words... here are the first of many squares... four lights. I'll do six lights and 4 blenders, then go dark....

I have four more almost done... but I got busy with a sick horse and getting 250 bales of hay...

Horse is fine now. Thank goodness.
:D :D :D

Wow--Karla, those are scrummy (as Tisha would say---I think it is scrumptious and yummy together!!)

Thanks for keeping me up to date. I will check back soon for more blocks....

k3n 08-05-2009 01:37 AM

Karla I love them both, the first time I looked I liked the first better but then I went back and preferred the second... make both! Please! :D

tlrnhi 08-05-2009 02:32 AM

It's beautiful!
Love the colors!!
