Hi Everyone - I made this quilt in honour of my Grandmother, who I called Jo, who has now passed. She who told me I could be an artist from when I was very small and actually made me believe I could create. Her doyley is around the image of the bird. It is titled "Season Of Plenty". I bet she would have gotten a kick out of seeing her doyley online. So, Jo, this one is for you and for letting me dream.

Hi wvdek - yes, and he helps with the sewing too. Believe me!!~!! It does get difficult when quilting though as he tends to sit on the quilt on the machine as you try to sew. Thankyou for your comment:)
Thankyou too sewnsewer2 :) |
That is a very nice quilt to honour your grandma. Beautiful colours.
That's absolutely beautiful!
Jo was right.... you definitely have talent. Well done! |
Thankyou BlueChicken - it was more that she made me believe that anything was achievable, sadly she got dementia and never knew I became an artist, which eventually led me into quiltmaking. I always believe everyone has artistic talent, you just need the key to the door and for someone to tell you it is possible. I always tell people, 'yes, you can do it" - THAT was the real gift she gave me. Watch children paint pictures till someone tells them they must colour in between the lines, then it changes. Once there are rules we get frightened of what people might say, are we doing it 'correctly" - you have to rules of course, but you also have to learn to listen to your inside 'voice' so the rules are only a platform for what we are capable of creating, not the whole.

It's beautiful, she would have been very proud.
What a beautiful tribute to your grandmother.
Beautiful. Your grandmother is smiling I'm sure.
Would like to see a bit closer detail. |
that is so georgeous. what a great tribute to grandma :D
I don't think closer detail would help much, Deecee. It is made of quilt fabrics, furnishing material, dress fabrics, laces, beading, ribbons, with satin stitch applique. Size is 26 inches by 46 inches. All fabrics were backed with Vlisofix and it was formed on a muslin background which I mapped the design out on and worked from the top of the piece towards the bottom. Hope that helps:)

It's beautiful and such a nice tribute to her. She would be proud. :D :D :D
That is Beautiful. She was right you are an artist.
Thanks so much for sharing this. It is very special.
Love things with texture and interesting bits and bobs. I always wonder about the story behind them.
It is beautiful. I'm sure that she would be so proud and pleased as punch to see your quilt and her doily on it!!!
Deecee - sthe story behind the quilt itself is based in Greek mythology, when the Kingfisher appears the farmers know to plant there crops because the appearance means that within fourteen days it will rain. That is why I named the quilt what I did. Interestingly we get them in our garden and it is very often the case that the rain follows in a couple of weeks. In Australia we have huge black cockatoos (parrot type birds) and an old farmer once told me that when the black cockatoos rise and call you will have rain that day, and I always found that to be the case when I lived in the mountains. Deecee probably knows this story too :)
What a beautiful memento. I bet your grandma is smiling down on you, tickled pink that you included her doily.TFS.
ranger |
Yep, When the black cockies fly down from the nearby mountain, it means rain is coming.
Nice tribute - the doily works well in it.
She would have just grinned seeing this tribute to her. Good job!

I just wanted to say 'thankyou' to everyone who has given me such lovely feedback. It is very encouraging, and music to the soul. I know since I joined this group I have had enormous fun with my quilting and seeing what everyone else is doing too. Someone wrote to Deecee yesterday re her quilt and talked about a watercolour site, thankyou to that someone, because I have just had the BEST day making a small watercolour wallhanging. I think that is the nicest part of joining, it opens you up to new possibilities and if you have a problem you can ask for help. So to all of you a big hug and warm wishes from Down Under in Australia :) Thankyou all.....You're the best !!!!

your grandmother was right & you have become an artist and a very smart person. someday you will be an inspiration to someone and pass on your grandmothers gift
Thankyou Sandra, everyone has that gift inside themselves if they just want to look, the trick is to just believe you can do it, my grandmother just made me believe. She ran a kindergarten after my grandfather died, some twenty years before she did, and I guess teaching was her gift so she knew how to make people have confidence. I was not anything special but she just made me believe in dreaming. I always try to encourage people and I used to teach pottery at times and I got more kick out of watching others achieve than doing so myself, now that was a real buzz!!! To see someone's face when they walked away with their own personal creation was the best 'feel good' of all.
