Hi all,

I'm in a frenzy, trying to complete my Christmas projects! In the name of saving time, I decided to do a pattern that I've already done in the past, but I have fewer fabrics for this project, so the blocks look different, and I'm having trouble seeing which arrangement is more attractive!!

I'm doing the Flying Geese pattern that I used for these placemats:

Ok, so I chose some really nice fabrics that match my mother's dining room color scheme, and I made up two sets to see how to arrange them. Having fewer fabrics makes this pattern look different!!

I will be putting the border strips on either side, like before, too. Which way do you like the flying geese blocks set??

pocoellie 12-17-2008 05:33 AM

Personally, I like the second one best, but they're both very pretty. I'm sure she'll love either.

sandpat 12-17-2008 05:50 AM

#2.... I might snitch your placement pattern idea for myself after the holidays. Your mom will love those.

mary quite contrary 12-17-2008 06:07 AM

If you don't have them done already another option is to point them all out so it looks like they are flying around in a circle. Each point points toward a different side.

Brazen 12-17-2008 06:36 AM

Like this, Mary?

I do like that better~!

mary quite contrary 12-17-2008 06:40 AM

Yes. I like it better but that is just an opinion.

You are inspiring me.

Bevanger 12-17-2008 06:48 AM

Ok I won't be much help kiddo, cuz I like them both..

sewjoyce 12-17-2008 07:15 AM

I like #2 also!!

bj9patch 12-17-2008 08:44 AM

All I want to know is-What time is Dinner?

Ms Grace 12-17-2008 09:07 AM

I love this idea. They are all very pretty. Would you mind sharing what size your geeses are???

Brazen 12-17-2008 09:18 AM

Sure! The finished goose block is 3 1/2" by 6 1/2".

Thanks all! I took Mary's idea and just rearranged one corner of the greens, so that they match now.

I have 2 placemat centers completed and am about to piece the 3rd. I'm making two sets of 4 of these placemats.... my mother's will have black tone-on-tone border strips, and my mother-in-law's will have a brownish or something else that matches border strip set.

Ms Grace 12-17-2008 09:25 AM

Brazen,
Thanks so much!! :-)

mary quite contrary 12-17-2008 09:29 AM

Yeah. Now I can't wait to see them. lol

Brazen 12-17-2008 11:42 AM

All 4 centers are done!! Next up is to cut the 8 border rectangle strips and get them sewn on. I don't think I have enough backing fabric to actually finish them, and maybe not even enough batting, but the biggest part will be finished. Then I'll do the second set of 4 placemat centers.

beachlady 12-17-2008 01:36 PM

Very nice.

ania755 12-17-2008 03:18 PM

They are beautiful, you did a great job

blmclin 12-18-2008 10:48 AM

Very pretty, next year I'm going to try to make my 4 daughters and daughter in law a set of placemats for each month. Sounded like a good idea until I realized that is 52 placemats. :-) Think I'll probably start right after Christmas when I can get the Christmas fabric on sale.

I love the #2 and yes, the second arrangement was my favorite, but both were great.

What no batting scraps? I wish I were near. I always have bags leftover. I buy the precut bags of batting and use what I need then roll up the rest and keep for other projects.

gcathie 12-19-2008 12:52 AM

I think it will look nice with which ever you chose....I know I'm no help ....sorry

barnbum 12-19-2008 04:07 AM

I love what Mary suggested!! Great choice!!

Brazen 12-19-2008 08:58 AM

Hey Gail! No I don't have much for batting scraps! Crazy! I, too, buy batting by the precut roll. I buy rolls of 100% cotton batting in crib-size rolls. The only quilting I do myself is couch throw sizes and smaller... so this works for me. :D

I have my first 4 placemat centers done, and I bought the backing fabric and batting for them today! So the fab is about to go into the washing machine... I won't get to actually sew on them until tomorrow because I work 3pm to midnight tonight, if you can believe it. LOL!!! The store I work at normally closes at 8pm, but tonight is a special, one-time event for staying open until midnight. I'm going to be so tired! LOL

And it's getting so close to Christmas, I have too much sewing to do for all this working stuff!! hehehe

Brazen 12-19-2008 10:59 AM

Here's one of the four.... after they're quilted and finished, I'll put them on my table and take a pic of the group before I mail them out!

Thank you Mary and everyone for your advice and thoughts! :D

mary quite contrary 12-19-2008 11:52 AM

You are very welcome. I like them alot.

SulaBug 12-19-2008 11:57 AM

I love the way they turned out. You did a great job & I know they will be a welcome gift.

Happy Hpolidays,
Cheryl

sandpat 12-19-2008 12:26 PM

Yes, they are still looking good!

GailG 12-20-2008 01:59 PM

Very nice. I love the color combinations and the arrangement.

sunflower 12-20-2008 02:02 PM

I like the first set better because I think the colours harmonize more closely.

gabers25ouj 12-20-2008 03:36 PM

I like the darker placemats. Would you be willing to share patters?. Thanks

Thanks Sunflower! The first set of placemats I made for myself and my own dining room. When I decided to make my mother a set for Christmas, I asked what colors her room was and she said, "Beige, green, rose and black." So those are the 4 colors in her placemats. LOL!

jacquemoe 12-20-2008 09:26 PM

I thought I liked the first one but after going back and forth for a while, I think I choose #2.

Mplsgirl 12-21-2008 02:52 AM

I like #2 also.

Hi gabers,

I got the pattern out of the Fall 2008 issue of Quilts 'n More magazine by Better Homes and Gardens. If you can't find it, let me know and I'll type up the sizes to cut your fabrics.

Quilts from the Heart 12-23-2008 05:56 AM

They have turned out very nice- anyone would be proud to have them on the table ~
