Really Beautiful :!: :!:

Karla, I REALLY like this layout (and your fabric choices!) on this Irish Chain. One of our charity quilt makers made one (non-charity quilt) using this pattern, but each 'circle' was a different color group of fabrics (purple circle, blue circle, red circle, etc) . Even unquilted, it was one of the most popular tops in our little annual quilt show.

k3n 04-07-2009 12:19 AM

Wow, Karla, that is going to be beautiful! I LOVE those fabrics!

As for layouts, there was a link on here a while ago from pittsburg Pam with some unusual log cabing layouts, hang on, I think I saved it...

That is beautiful.

barnbum 04-07-2009 01:42 AM

Kx--thanks for that link. :D I love some of those lay outs. Thankfully, I do have several log cabin books with designs... but the tricky part is my squares are tiny compared to those, (2.5" strips vs. 1-1.5" ones) and mine end with lights--and most end with darks. It changes the design some. I think my Judy Martin book has a ton more options than the E Burns log cabin in a day one... I'll have to dig it out soon.

Last night I worked on the Black and White Splash... too many projects! Nah.

tlrnhi 04-07-2009 01:46 AM

You worked on the black and white splash? I'm sure there is an update, yes?

barnbum 04-07-2009 01:49 AM

Oh--not quite big enough to share, Terri--but it's pretty cool. It was amazing how things fit together. I'm very excited about it...

It's rare I get so much quilting time on a school day... what a treat!!

Off to the barn--there's snow out there with 20-30 mph winds:shock: ... but I have a doc's appt this morning, so I can dawdle a bit...

tlrnhi 04-07-2009 01:59 AM

Ok, I'll wait until you have more and in the meantime, I drool a bit more over these blocks :)

SNOW?? OH NO!!
Make sure the "kids" are warm!

Drive carefully and hope all goes well with doc. :)

barnbum 04-07-2009 02:45 AM

I'm off topic ... but the horses are snuggled in their stalls with warm water, ample hay, and soft straw. It's a cozy place out there. I'll check them once more before I head to school--clean up and top off waters. Dad is coming at noon to peek too.... but no babies eminent--thank goodness. Let this cold pass first.

Terri--this doc appt is for my foot--not the other stuff.... :?

Glad all horses are happy for the day.

Karla, doesn't matter what doc appt is for, just hope all is ok.

I have dental cleaning in the morning...yuck, BUT...after that, I get to look at fabric at Ben Franklins. :) Not that it's the best selection, but at least I get to look!

reneebobby 04-07-2009 04:05 AM

Oh my that is going to be one heck of a gorgous quilt. I can't wait till it's done.

marla 04-07-2009 08:48 AM

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE! So very creative to present a log cabin block this way! Thank you for your inspiration and design! I will have to do some watercolors and play too!!

marla 04-07-2009 08:52 AM

SNOW? Good grief, where do you live? Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No wonder your foot needs Dr. care! you probably have frost bite11

gramadona 04-07-2009 10:14 AM

OOoooo!! I love florals! Your beautiful blocks look like Spring bouquets. Lovely!

Judith 04-07-2009 11:38 AM

Absolutely amazing. Your fabrics are gorgeous and you have done an exquisite job with them. Something like this is definitely going on my to do list. Congratulations.

tarib 04-07-2009 11:52 AM

As usual, in the end you will have outdone yourself. The colors are just beautiful. I can't wait to see the finished product.

The Babe 04-07-2009 12:00 PM

Karla this is very inspirational quilt-to-be. I have never seen anything like it before. It takes the log cabin block (which I love) to a whole different level. If I had to describe the pictures of your blocks in one word I would say "peaceful. Dixie in Alabama

barnbum 04-07-2009 02:42 PM

You gals are so encouraging!! Thank you for your kind replies. :D :D

Mousie 04-07-2009 04:11 PM

well, karla, you know I loooove these fabrics, and the log cabin,...and now you have the bestest name for this quilt!
I have lots of florals, but they are in bundles for other projects, nothing doing, but I have to get some watercolors...have to, have to,....you made me do it, lol!!! you just keep putting these where I can see them, and I have such a weakness for these....aww, ahhh....I'm sighing and smelling...might as well do it here, when I get in the fabric store, and start feeling the fabrics? My allergies act up...I even get headaches, but just keep right on doing it,...cause I'm hopelessly addicted, and blocks like these are the reason why. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

beachlady 04-07-2009 04:43 PM

Gorgeous quilt Karla and I still hope to make one some day.

waquilter 04-07-2009 05:07 PM

These are really really beautiful.

#1piecemaker 04-08-2009 07:02 AM

I love those prints. Seems like I just can't find material like that around our neck of the woods without giving up an arm of leg. Absolutely beautifu the way you have them arranged. Keep going, Keep sewing. They are georgeous.

jasper 04-08-2009 09:21 AM

Just one question what are the size of your squares on this quilt?

Kellie G 04-08-2009 09:40 AM

Those blocks are gorgeous, can't wait to see the quilt finished. I'll bet you can't either.

barnbum 04-08-2009 10:44 AM

The blocks are about 7.75". I want to make a lot, so it will be awhile before this one is together. but, since 53 are done...maybe I'll play around with possible designs this weekend. I'm going to check my Judy Martin log cabin books for ideas first. It has to look like rambling gardens through a yard...

dznkat 04-08-2009 11:32 AM

Beautiful design, Karla!

marty girl 04-08-2009 12:09 PM

Please, please, please - - - take pictures (you do have a digital camera, don't you like all good quilters?) of each version and post them.

mcdaniel023 04-08-2009 03:12 PM

Love those blocks. Now I am inspired to do something with those wonderful florals in my stash.

Maybe because it's Easter, but the cross just jumped out at me. These are soooo beautiful. good job!!! I would never have thought of doing this, but now....you've given me some ideas.

Bea 04-10-2009 08:12 PM

I fell in love with your beautiful watercolor squares. I am going on a shop hop soon and the floral fabrics would be something to shop for. Where can I find the pattern? I would be willing to pay the price and more.

Okay--here's the info where I got the pattern, but it's given in pieces, not done in the strip method, so if you're familiar with the strip way--you can just follow one of my squares, and you're good. But I'd suggest getting the magazine just for all the other stuff in it!

The magazine, which I purchased years ago, is called "Quilt It-Log Cabin Favorites." It's a Quilter's Newsletter Magazine. There's no date on the cover, but the copyright date is 2005. It was $5.99. It has many wonderful ideas and patterns in it.

In the front it says: for additional copies of Log Cabin Favorites, call 1-800-590-3465 and ask for Newsstand Specials, or write to PO Box 4101, Golden, CO 80401-0101 OR visit them on their website at www.quiltersnewsletter.com

AND--in searching for other designs to try, I found a book I own called "Watercolor Log Cabin Quilts." I'd forgotten all about this book!
AND it has one in there called Mosaic Garden that is similar to this idea. It's a traditional log cabin pattern, but the watercolor idea looks wonderful. That book explains the whole watercolor concept beautifully. (I would have done better if I had read this first!) That book is from a Quilt Guild Series and is by Terry Johnson-Huhta.

The original pattern, from the magazine, was placed in all circles--which I decided wasn't the right plan for me. Here's the first one I made from this curvy pattern.

Thanks a million for all your good info. I will get busy on Monday and check out some of the sources you mentioned. Can't wait to start collecting but maybe better if I get the directions first. Some time I get too anxious about starting. I did finish many projects during this long cold winter here in Wisconsin. But today is lovely and even if I should be cooking and cleaning for Easter, I can still be thinking about my next quilt.

Have a happy Easter and again Thanks for your promptness.

Bea
