Yesterday dh and I went to York for the day and had couple of hours in the Castle museum......guess what I found? A tumbling blocks quilt from around 1860. Sorry about the flash in the pic....it was so dark in there, and of course it was in a glass case! I know it will interest you Loretta!!

Wow!! It looks in great condition Karen, don't worry about the flash, you can still see alot of the detail!!

Wow. The border on that quilt is awesome! Did it have a history on it, as in who made it?

Sorry Melissa....no history on it other than the fact that it was made out of dress silks and ribbons!.... One of the quilts there was done by a husband and wife, she did the sewing but apparently she had no eye for colour so he had to decide which block went where!

Beautiful quilt! I've always loved the Tumbling Blocks pattern. It really suits itself to scraps, doesn't it? And just look at the borders! Gorgeous! Thanks for sharing Karenmay! I enjoyed your other pictures as well.

Craftybug 08-16-2008 06:18 PM

Karen I looked at the link you pasted and those quilts are awesome over 300 years old and the have over 100 of them in the castle. I wish the quilts I make will last that long :D

That border is indeed amazing.
I would probably never have combined GFG in a border with Tumbling Blocks but there you see the stunning results. Can you imagine how tiny the GFG hexs must be?

Thank you so much for sharing!

Amazing quilt. Combining two patterns like that is amazing and to think it was probably all done by hand. WOW.

Thanks for sharing your pictures.

Some of our Group are hoping to go to Barcelona in March, so hopefully will be able to share some good stuff with you all.
