I didn't know about the meaning of the red square in the center either... but I really like what you've started anyway! Seems like you need at least one block with what some might call a "mistake" in it, acknowledging that nobody on earth is perfect, so I would use this first block in the quilt, too.. Unfortunately, everything I make has some mistakes!

The story about the log cabins being used for runaway slaves is a myth. I spent years teaching this concept to my students only to find it's not true. The research shows the log cabin quilt pattern was created awhile after the Civil War was over. There is no research to prove quilts were ever used on the Underground Railroad. I was SO disappointed to learn this. Sounded like such a neat idea!!!

Fantastic! You have a good eye and I am sure it will be stunning when it's finished. Don't 'over think' each strip, just grab a dark or a light and go with it, when you get all the blocks together and stand back you will see the overall effect will be amazing! :)
