2 Chevron quilts - comparison of 2 different methods

I made these 2 chevron quilts using different methods. The blue/green one was made using half square triangles. The pink/yellow/green one was made using rectangles and this pattern:

I thought it would be good to give a comparison of the two methods.
Half square triangle method:
  • Starched the fabric
  • Layout was straight rows, easier to keep track of as I was going along
  • Outer edge was all on the grain of the fabric, so it was easy to handle
Rectangle method:
  • Starched the fabric
  • Layout was diagonal rows. I had to keep the whole quilt laid out so I wouldn’t assemble it wrong
  • Once the outer points were trimmed off, the entire outer edge was on the bias
  • Sandwiching it was very difficult. Even with starch, I still had some stretching and distortion
  • I quilted a looser design so that I could work with the fullness. I did have a few small pleats in the edges, but the binding covered it well.
  • If I had put a border on this, it may have been easier to handle.

I’m happy with how they both came out, but next time, I will use the triangle method. It was less hassle overall.

They are both beautiful. I have used the 1/2 triangle method and I think I will continue to use it based on your comments about the second method. I always have stretching on bias edges no matter how careful I am.

Those are awesome, a chevron is on my list to do, I have had that pattern book marked for a very long time. Thanks for posting, it was a great reminder for me.
