Linda, those are absolutely gorgeous! I love how different each pattern looks just by changing the batik! I really like the yellow one (looks kind of like a lily)! If you ever need a home for your artwork, I live really close! :)

Hi Karen, nice to hear from you. I think you mean the one with the wild colors, including yellow? That's a bird of paradise design. I wish I had used a different fabric on the back, because the front and back blended together in part of the quilt, making the design not as evident, but I still like the quilt.

The shadow effect is amazing!

KarenBarnes 08-14-2011 06:34 AM

Actually, I love the combination of colors!

BTW you should join us on 9/3 for a get together at quiltiludrop's! It's in your area! PM her for info!

Great qiuilts. I would love to try one of these but wonder is my arthritic hands could handle it. I do hand embroidery so I guess there would not be much difference

Reverse applique right?

No, there's really no such thing as reverse applique. Applique is applique! You turn it under and you sew it down. However some people do call it reverse applique when the primary pattern is being revealed by cutting away and tucking under the "background" part of the pattern. In this case, the primary pattern is what is being turned under and sewn down (it's on top) so it doesn't fit that definition.

great colors. I am going to have to try this!!!

I respectfully beg to differ, but I took a quilting class in 1981 and it included "reverse applique", so if there is no such thing there are many quilters out there that think there is. Just google it there are several tutorials online.

Beautiful work!!!

Homemother 08-14-2011 03:53 PM

Thanks for the explanation of this technique! I think yours are beautiful!!!

I'm going to attempt to make an applique using this technique to make my bichon frise. I've drawn the picture and am wondering how I'm going to trace it onto the dark fabric. Maybe I'll cut it out and draw around the outside. See if that will work. In the meantime, I'd better trace my drawing onto another piece of paper so I don't loose my hours of work!!!

sc-sunshine 08-14-2011 04:06 PM

i would like to try it...i would like to try it...i would like to try it...

Rock Lady 08-14-2011 04:20 PM

Astounding! They are gorgeous.

dunster 08-14-2011 04:21 PM

I'm quoting Nancy Lee Chong - see this reference - http://www.prqc.com/qa.htm - scroll down to #14.

It's fine if you want to call something reverse applique, but the techniques used to create it are no different than the techniques used for all other needle turn applique.

wow. beautiful --a new techniaue to me

sc-sunshine 08-15-2011 04:38 AM

I think it doesn't matter what this is called...these are beautiful quilts...I applique stacking pieces and satin stitching...then one day I decided to blanket stick, then in order to have travel sewing started doing turned, I didn't know it had a different name and this method my friend and I called "cut out" design applique. And my sister who doesn't understand my love of quilts calls all quilts...brace yourself...RAGS that no one wants.
Always remember different regions of the world use different wordings to describe things. In my own family...quilts are...quilts, blankets, throws, towbels (kids word for towel backing and pieced front) and moving blankets...and the dreadful RAG.

MelodyWB 08-15-2011 04:41 AM

STUNNING!!

vivianv 08-16-2011 06:14 PM

Beautiful, I signed up for a Nancy Chong class before she
move back to Hawaii. Sadly, she had to cancel the class and when it was rescheduled I was unable to attenStill hope to learn her method one day.
