It was given to me as payment for a babysitting job a couple years ago. There are patches falling out and it is stained on the back. Very well-loved! I really like it and just want to know how old it is. It is hand patched and hand quilted. some of the thinner fabrics have deteriorated :( So I don't think I could preserve it. Theres not a lable on it that i can find.

could be even older. The fabric looks pretty loosely woven.
What a treasure! |

Yeah its the thinner, possibly homespun fabrics that are falling apart or missing, theres some squares of blacks that are gone too
black with yellow flowers pretty much gone :( theres only 2 squares of this cute purple in entire quilt :) theres only 2.5 of these squares left |
It sure is pretty!!!!!!!!!

I wonder if some of the squares are feed sacks?

I had an old quilt from my Grandmother. It wasn't usable as a quilt but I made it into teddy bears (they could even have some very worn spots, just adds character). Also had enough to make a table runner. I gave a teddy bear to my children and told them it was a quilt from their Great Grandmother not a toy for the kids.

Some of the fabrics do look like feed sacks. You can see examples of authentic feed sack prints here: http://www.rickrack.com/antqfile1a.html
1930s feed sack prints have been very popular with quilters. They reproduce them now. You have quite the treasure. I adore the dense hand quilting. |
It's a pretty heavy quilt for being so thin, and the fabrics are not soft, kinda rough. the yellows and some blues are softer like a dress material. the others could be feed sacks.
|
It looks like a Boston Commons or a variation of a Trip around the world. Those are most certainly feedsack fabrics. They look loosely woven on my computer. Such a lovely old quilt!

wow, have no idea how old, but a pretty quilt, bet it was beautiful when first made!
|
There are professionals that can date the quilt for you. Perhaps checking online for some in your area. The quilt is a treasure tho' no matter its age.
|
That is beautiful. I wouldn't know if it's a 30s quilt but I love it.
|
Thanks so much for posting such a detailed view of this old beauty. Can't help much with a date, looks 30's, but maybe there is some older fabric in there too?
Interesting isn't it....many of us could say we have some vintage or at least old fabric in our own stashes - all mixed in with the new/current. I am guessing this is not a new phenomenon, must make it a little trickier for the valuers. Anyway, look forward to seeing what everyone else thinks. Please let us know if you end up getting an appraisal of some kind, would be really great to see what an experienced valuer would say. |

very nice....looks as loved as my daughters baby blanket. I love it.

It is beautiful and I would say the '30's sounds about right. I have one that my great-grandmother made and it is solids so it is harder to date. It is in much worse condition than yours but I love it none the less!
Enjoy it -- it's a treasure!! Pat in Atlanta |
I don't know how old it is, but it sure is pretty!
