I had this idea of making the 3D pinwheel with HST and then iron the printed triangle slightly next to the seam. Looks exactly as I wanted it to look but there are now 8 layers of fabric to one seam..............can that work and how will it act in the finished quilt?
Would it help to make the seamallowence maybe half an inch?

I don't see why it would be a problem, just plan your quilting accordingly :wink: You aren't planning on quilting the pinwheels, right? So if you keep your seams at a 1/4" you could quilt next to their seams and all should be good :D:D:D

when I made ds' pinwheel quilt I had that same problem. I ended up pressing the seams open and that helped alot. here's a link to the one I made

Question: Did you sew two HSTs together for each pinwheel (4 total), so isn't it 6 to each layer instead of 8, or is my counting vision that off?

You sew one side with the long side of the pinwheel with the background fabric (3 layers) with the folded part of the pinwheel plus background (5 layers) and end up with..........just a lot :lol:

With the "flat" pinwheel it works well it is just the amount of layers with the 3 D one. Folding the seamallowence apart doesnt work as I will later quilt in the ditch and in that case I would just go over the thread.

I am not so afraid of the blocks coming apart but getting really stiff.

I'm having trouble visualizing how to do this, though the finished block looks amazing. Would you consider a tute?

I did a 3D pinwheel doll quilt and the pattern said to open the seams for less bulk when pressing. the end of each piece laid flat like a little triangle and it worked. I love the look of 3D in quilts.

What a great idea. I would love to see it.
