I finally learned how to paper piece. (Thanks for the gentle nudge QuiltE) Made a mug rug with my "learning" piece.

Then I tackled 4 patterns from Artisania. Definitely not easy for a first paper pieced quilt but sooo worth it.

It was almost as fun shopping my Halloween fabric stash as it was making the quilt. :)
Backing:

Don't know if you can see it but I tried a little bit of "beaker" quilting.

I even designed a devil pattern for the centre but I feel he came out looking more like an evil bunny so will get his own quilt instead of joining his pals in this one.

This quilt was made to enter into a modern quilt show but was rejected very quickly. Not capital M modern nor capital Q quilting. I love it anyway and, even thought it isn't their style, it is mine. :)

libby2595 03-18-2014 07:57 AM

how fun!!

i've been toying with the idea of paper piecing.
i think you might have just tipped the scales for me!

i love your devil!

ManiacQuilter2 03-18-2014 08:02 AM

Did QuiltE transfer you into a monster??? Just kidding !! LOVE it. Your quilt will be so delightful on Halloween night. For a beginner, you have certainly have hop out of that category with the well pieced blocks. Backing is an absolute gem !! Congratulation on a job well done !!

DebraK 03-18-2014 08:18 AM

I can tell that you will become a paper piecing beast ;-) Good work!

works4me 03-18-2014 08:25 AM

libby2595 - paper piecing wasn't nearly as hard as I thought it would be. Go for it, at least once. :)
Thank you. I learned a lot designing the devil pattern and will apply that to the next version. "The Devil Made Me Do It" will be the quilt name and it will likely have both versions of my devil friend.

ManiacQuilter2 - I am actually an influence on QuiltE. :) Since knowing me, she has made her first Halloween quilt and looks at Halloween fabrics quite differently than before. She is quite a persuasive lady, though. :D
This quilt is already up on the fireplace. Might show up at work on October 1. Thanks for the kind words. I do tend to jump in with both feet when I try something.

DebraK - thanks. I now know it is a skill I can do whenever I wish. My huge cross stitch is number one priority for the next while, though, but I do have some pp patterns I've been holding onto for a long time that I will get to eventually. That is, unless there is more nudging form QuiltE. :)

Kitsie 03-18-2014 09:02 AM

I agree that QuiltE is a great inspiration! Have you seen how to do paper-piecing without having to rip the paper off? Your work is wonderful! Take a look at this :

http://www.twiddletails.com/store/in...age=page&id=21 Will save you a ton of time in being able to use your "templates" many times over and not having to pick off the paper! I agree, PP is wonderful!

Tartan 03-18-2014 10:07 AM

Very cute and great fabrics too! Your devil is very good but I have to agree that he does look like an evil bunny now that you've mentioned it.:D

Doggramma 03-18-2014 10:09 AM

Very nice! Love the fabrics. Glad you're having fun!

Lissa 03-18-2014 10:30 AM

Hi works4me...wonderful creations!...really nice. Please tell me what beaker quilting is (I am just learning).

works4me 03-18-2014 10:48 AM

Kitsie - Thanks. I hadn't seen that technique. Seems a little daunting but doable.
Tartan - Thanks a lot. He is definitely a devil until the evil bunny thought is planted in your brain.
Doggramma - I love the fabrics, too. :) I currently have over 285 Halloween different fabrics. Yes, it was a lot of fun. I enjoyed watching my Amigos come to life.
Lissa - It isn't a technique. I just took the outline of a laboratory beaker and used it as a quilt design. It seemed appropriate. :)
And, it seems we are all learning, no matter how long we have been at this. :) Never hesitate to ask. Everyone around here is quite helpful.

Anael 03-18-2014 11:35 AM

That came out great! Your bunny devil looks ok to me!
You know you shouldn't always listen to QuiltE :D :D

works4me 03-18-2014 11:48 AM

Thanks. I think he's cute. Just not the same feel as the other monsters.
Oh, I don't always listen to QuiltE. I still refuse to make a DJ. :D

Anael 03-18-2014 11:52 AM

Oh do you? Why don't you want to make your own DJ? It's a beautiful quilt and you will be so satisfied once you made one yourself :D :D :D

works4me 03-18-2014 12:32 PM

Don't you start. :)

Anael 03-18-2014 01:03 PM

:D :D :D :D They're only small blocks, you don't need much fabric for one or two or three :D :D :D

dhanke 03-18-2014 01:08 PM

Awesome Halloween quilt, you did a monstrously fabulous job on it!

Did you know the DJ has only 226 blocks? So you do have enough different Halloween fabrics to make each block different! Did you start yours already?

works4me 03-18-2014 01:54 PM

thank you dhanke :)
Anael - and I was worried about QuiltE. Yeesh. I already have a 3 year cross stitch project. I certainly don't need a 3 year plus quilt project.

QuiltE 03-18-2014 08:14 PM

W4Me ... with your mug rug as your maiden PP project, now this ..... I can only imagine the next PP challenge! hhmmmm ......... DJ would be a logical next! :) Seriously, I am SO proud of you and what you have achieved. The ghost is my favourite of this bunch .... though the Devil is a close 2nd!

Fantastic Idea, Anael ....
W4Me ...
just think how fantastic DJ would be done with your grey spider web fabric for the backgrounds and then each block in a different Halloween print! You know you can do a Baby Jane, only using some of the blocks. Would be a nice break from your cross-stitch at times and help you keep your PP skills practiced! :):)

Quiltaddict 03-18-2014 10:16 PM

I love your blocks, especially the devil block. Keep up the great work.

gabeway 03-19-2014 04:21 AM

Looking good!

DebraK 03-19-2014 05:14 AM

what a fabulous idea! a Halloween Dear Jane ;-)

works4me 03-19-2014 05:56 AM

Thank you QuiltE. But, you forget, my ghost is actually a mummy. :) I didn't like him at first but, the more I look into those eyes, the more I am mesmerized.

I know how fabulous I think a Halloween DJ would be. Don't want to spend the cash for the programme and sure can't fathom blocks that tiny.

Quiltaddict - Thanks. I love my devil, too, especially for a first effort. I already have ideas for the new version.

Thanks gabeway.

DebraK - You, too? :)

QuiltnNan 03-20-2014 02:21 AM

congrats on learning and nicely done

twinkie 03-20-2014 03:38 AM

Yes Mummmmmmmmmmmmmmy!
duhhhhhhhhhh ... can you tell my brain has gone to mush this week (OK, I already hear you saying yet again or still!)

Yes, it's the eyes and the bandage strips that sold that block on me!

Did you start your DJs yet?
:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

DJ 03-20-2014 05:08 AM

Cool! It looks like you're having fun!

works4me 03-20-2014 06:41 AM

Thank you QuiltnNan.
Thanks twinkie - who says monsters have to be scary?
QuiltE - DJ? What's a DJ?
DJ- yes, I enjoyed working on this. One of my favourite parts is the sashing square with the frog trying to escape the lab. :)

fangman 03-20-2014 07:42 AM

Very cute.

kalady 03-20-2014 08:10 AM

Great fabric choices!

solstice3 03-20-2014 08:21 AM

nicely done . that is something I need to try

2manyhobbies 03-20-2014 09:21 AM

You did a great job. Don't you just love paper piecing? Pox on the quilt show. You enjoyed the process and the results. That's what counts. For that I give you a digital blue ribbon :-)

works4me 03-20-2014 10:00 AM

fangman - my boys and I thank you. :)
kalady - thanks. It was fun shopping my stash.
solstice3 - thank you. It was fiddly but not as tough as I expected.
2manyhobbies - thank you. Paper piecing certainly opens up possibilities. And you have no idea how much the digital blue ribbon means to me. Thank you for that.

QUILTNMO 03-20-2014 11:55 AM

nicely done!!!!

Greenheron 03-20-2014 12:43 PM

Oh, I love that mummy and your fabrics are so right for all the 'amigos'.

gramquilter2 03-20-2014 01:16 PM

Love your quilt.

sewingsuz 03-20-2014 01:40 PM

Such a good job.

Anael ... where have you been all day, to not have answered her question?

DJ = Dear Jane
(as though you didn't know!!!!!!!!!!)
:D:D:D:D:D

Auntie Em 03-20-2014 05:14 PM

Looks like so much fun!!! Great job!!!

works4me 03-21-2014 03:17 PM

Thank you QUILTNMO, gramquilter2, sewingsuz and Auntie Em. I enjoyed doing it.

Greenheron - I like the way the mummy turned out also. It was nice to have so many fabric options in order to personalize each Amigo. I have no idea where the quilt name came from. I just put the 4 blocks on the design wall and thought 4 Amigos. And it stuck.

QuiltE - I have other ideas for a lot of Halloween fabrics. Sorry, but a DJ is still not in the cards.
