I machine quilt free motion on my little portable Baby lock with a little opening in the arm. It's a struggle so I keep my quilts to twin size and no bigger. I work full time too but I am lucky to have a space I can leave my quilting as is and jump on whenever I have a few minutes. If I had to clean up after every session, I would never finish. Longarm is a dream...

there is a video on youtube that a woman shows how she made a quilting table around her machine out of styrofoam sheets and vinyl. I used her method and it worked great.
