54/40 For BIL

1 Attachment(s)
This one is a house warming gift for my brother in law. He is not really quilt-worthy so I used this as a warm up for a more intricate version of 54/40 I want to make. He loves purple and so I picked up a nice purple batik for the backing. I know that is the side he will use.

very nice, I don't know what you mean not intricate. It looks like a lot of work and very pretty. I've always wanted to make one of these. never heard it call 54/40 . . .?

Tartan 06-10-2019 07:52 PM

Great quilt and one of my favourite patterns too!

The block is called “54-40 or Fight”. This one has them alternated with 9 Patch blocks.

it’s very pretty with all the bright colors against black.

It turned out splendidly...I really like the pattern. I’m sure your BIL will love it.

bearisgray 06-11-2019 02:51 AM

Great quilt! I like the contrast of the light colors against the dark background.

Queenbarbiej 06-11-2019 03:15 AM

That is a great quilt. Know this one is on my bucket list of quilts to make.

pocoellie 06-11-2019 03:25 AM

Beautiful job!!! That block has been on my list for awhile, I think I'd better it made and off my list.

cat-on-a-mac 06-11-2019 03:27 AM

Guess I'd have called this a variation of Tennessee Waltz. I love how you did it scrappy with the black!

luvstoquilt 06-11-2019 03:40 AM

Strikingly beautiful. I hope he will love it.

lynnsv 06-11-2019 04:14 AM

I hope he appreciates your time and work. Just beautiful

anonymous 06-11-2019 04:20 AM

For not being quilt worthy, I'd say he won the jackpot. He must have won the jackpot in the sister category too.

Friday1961 06-11-2019 04:47 AM

Very pretty! Love the colors against the black!

carolynjo 06-11-2019 05:03 AM

To my knowledge, that pattern has been around for years. I believe the name refers to a period in our history of expanding America's boundaries and the numbers refer to a certain parallel.

Iceblossom 06-11-2019 05:04 AM

Love the contrast and the 9-patches! Gives such a nice curved effect.

Cat-on-a-mac, Tennessee Waltz is what Judy Martin called it combining the 54-40 or Fight block with a Snowball and so it was popularized under that name.

54-40 or Fight was a slogan from the era of president James Polk (1850s). It was about the dividing line between Canada and the US, although that was settled on at the 49th parallel, which was the Oregon Territories (including the northern border of now Washington State.

Edit: Living here in Seattle, I'm also familiar with the Pig War which so far as I know, has no blocks!

And then there was Seward's Folly/President Lincoln's purchase of Alaska.

very nice!!!!!!

leighway 06-11-2019 06:02 AM

This quilt is strikingly beautiful and you did a great job with the color placements. LOVE it....great quilt for a guy, even a non-quiltworthy guy.

Doggramma 06-11-2019 06:17 AM

I love that pattern. Your quilt is pretty darn beautiful for someone not really quilt worthy though!

Bahahaha! Not quilt worthy!

Your quilt is beautiful! I love it ~

Barb in Louisiana 06-11-2019 09:28 AM

Very Nice quilt! I agree with the others. This may be simple to you but looks very complex to the average person. Hope he likes it.

sue.ross.8782 06-11-2019 09:51 AM

:D "Not Quilt Worthy!" I like that phrase. So nice of you to take pity on the fellow and give him such a gorgeous house warming gift.

Jingle 06-11-2019 10:00 AM

Totally beautiful. Very nice colors.

QuiltnNan 06-11-2019 01:27 PM

sewnclog 06-11-2019 01:40 PM

I too love the scrappiness of it and the different designs that pop out. Gorgeous.

Very beautiful quilt and the black against the bright colors makes it so stunning. Gorgeous is the only way to describe your quilt. I made a similar pattern from a book by Eleanor Burns called "Tennessee Waltz". It was a fun pattern to do. Your BIL is very lucky to get this gift.

Lynnie25 06-11-2019 07:25 PM

I so love this quilt, you have done amazing work on it. Haven't seen this pattern used in a quilt for quite a few years.

Mariposa 06-11-2019 07:36 PM

Beautiful quilt!

Just what I was thinking. I would love to see a quilt you have made for someone that you thought was worthy. Beautiful work, BrendaK

MicheleC 06-12-2019 08:50 AM

Your quilt is gorgeous! Hopefully your brother will appreciate the pieced side. I just watched the MSQC tutorial on this quilt and I want to make one, too.

SillySusan 06-12-2019 12:31 PM

Beautiful quilt! That 'quilt unworthy' guy better appreciate it and take good care of it! He should be told that he is so lucky to receive such a wonderful gift!

ccthomas 06-12-2019 04:30 PM

Nice quilt.

dunster 06-13-2019 08:36 AM

I love that pattern, and love the way you made it. I hope the BIL uses the "right" side of the quilt. He may surprise you and become quilt worthy after all.

Sharonquilts 06-13-2019 12:33 PM

Wow that's a beautiful quilt.
