I took a class for this one. You select your border (focus) fabric first then pull alot of different fabrics to coordiante/compliment(1/4yd) each - cut into 6" squares. After stitching, cutting, pressing, stitching, cutting and pressing again, you wind up with two different 9 patch blocks. After many many block sewn together, you wind up with a great scrappy looking 9 patch quilt. I even had a few left over to make a baby quilt. The queen sized quilt pictured I gave to a friend for a house warming gift, she loved it.[b]

My kind of quilt! When I first opened the page I was thinking, 'hum how to make a three hour quilt?'. One look told me I was dead wrong. It's beautiful Vicky; did you take a picture of the baby quilt as well?

|
That is stunning! Your fabric choices are gorgeous. Wow, what a lot of beautiful work! Lucky friend!

Thank you all... I did "borrow" the quilt back to enter it in a show, my first. Didn't place, but it was alot of fun to go through the process. My friend's name is Linda and my DH suggested I name the quilt "LINDA" which is spanish for "beautiful". I thought that was very sweet of him. I know it looks like alot of small pieces, but with the 6 to 9 technique it is as easy as making nine patches from two 6" bocks over and over again. This method may have other names, but the class I took was called 6 to 9. Sorry, I don't have a photo of the baby quilt :(

Very pretty!! I love pictures of quilts hanging.

That is a gorgeous quilt! I can imagine all of the work that went into it...it definitely paid off.
|
great job I love the colors. What show was this at?
|
Beautiful! :)

I found printed directions for this technique at http://www.getcreativeshow.com/seminars/nifty_nine_patch.htm. It is much easier if you have a diagram (at least for me it is) but once you make one set, it's like chain piecing after that. Hope this helps...

IT's THE NINE PATCH PARTY QUILT by ELENOR BURNS when you get on the site, scroll down to the bottom of the page, there is a video of Elenor giving instructions to make the "6 to 9" block that seems to have several other names.... ENJOY. This is a pretty awsome site for other quilting instructional videos... |
I was only going to check it out and ended up staying for the entire video. LOL. Thanks for sharing.

LOL, I think I like Eleanor's version better, it gives you the opportunity to "Square Up". The blocks I made started at 6" and the first cuts were at 2 inches each, no wiggle room. I like her scolloped boarder too, might have to make another quilt and try that technique. Maybe in 30's reproduction, I feel a quilt coming on
|
Oh gosh...ended up watching the whole video. That was fun..thanks for sharing!
|
Beautiful!
|
Very nice quilt... It looks like a nice quilt show
