My daughter attends a specialized STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) school. They still have music and art, as they are part of the state curriculum. The 7th grade class that has art this 2nd semester (about 50 students) painted fabric squares... I have 32 of them already, still waiting on about 18 more before we can make final decisions... this is a "slip it in the middle" project for DD & I, but she is going to help design / piece / quilt this since she is learning! My excuse is, that way a STEM student helped with the whole process :)

Here are four of the squares, you can see the range of colors I am working with. No two are alike, and this quilt will hang in the great hall at the school. We'll embroider the year on it before we give it back :)

At this point, we're thinking basic blocks with sashing / in school colors... but we're also inclined to do a D9P with some of the "tighter designs" and make that the center of the quilt, then the larger designs would be worked in as outer border somehow... or blockwork.

I'm trying to get them all laid out to get a master shot of what we have already... this one will be fun! :)

Do you know what kind of paint they use? I have an Indian stamp that I would love to print on fabric. These designs almost look like they are using the same type stamps. I think I can use acrylic paints.

I am waiting for the teacher to get back to me on whether the paint was set yet... as far as I know, they just used regular acrylic paint mixed with the "textile medium" to make it into fabric paint. The students made all the stampers, too!

DD said they made the stamps out of linoleum :) then they mixed them all up and got to pick whatever stamps they wanted to use.
