I'm doing a grand-mother garden by hand using english paper piecing. I saw in Quiltmaker this month that you are supposed to remove the basting thread once the hexagones have been joined. Is it bad to leave it in? I also take 3 stiches in the seam allowance at the beginning and the end of a seam. Am I going to jail !?!

Looks great to me

kathy 09-02-2011 04:20 PM

some people leave the paper in till the whole top is done, we wn't tell on you

wolfkitty 09-02-2011 04:22 PM

No jail because no quilt police here! Just be sure to remove the basting before quilting. :-)

MoMoSews 09-02-2011 04:23 PM

no jail time for you!!

Cyn 09-02-2011 04:30 PM

I leave the paper in until the hex's have been sewn together because I re use the same freezer paper over and over until it won't stick :)

Oh :-( I wanted to leave the basting for life !! What makes it wrong? I'm planning to quilt by hand a quarter of a inch inside and around the hexagones so the basting thread will not be in my way. What do you think? Is it better to take it out?

I do the same. As soon as the hexagone is surrounded I take it out. It is the basting thread that I'm not sure. Do you leave yours in?

Jingle 09-02-2011 04:42 PM

I would leave the basting in place if it didn't show on the front. Do things the way you and you will be happy.

QuiltingJaguar 09-02-2011 04:44 PM

Love this pattern do you know where I could get one?
Looks so nice and the colors match so great, thanks for sharing.

I was inspired by Fons and Porter "Love of Quilting" july 2008 Garden Party designed by Susan Getman. I bought the Ceylon Bali Batiks fat quarter bundle and worked around these colors to come up with the final design on EQ. I'll have the final product to show on the board in a year or two

SO pretty!

Jennifer22206 09-02-2011 05:31 PM

I would leave the papers in until each hexie is surrounded on each side.

I've done it both ways, leaving the basting in and taking it out. If it doesn't show and you don't have too much of a seam allowance (if it's not too bulky!) it's not bad to hand quilt, might take a bit more finger strength. Personally, I prefer to leave the basting stitches in.

And just remember - your quilt, your rules!

Nettie Phillips 09-02-2011 05:37 PM

Pretty. I would have probably left them in too.

KatFish 09-02-2011 06:48 PM

I remove the templates after I have a flower "block" sew together. I leave in the basting thread. It doesn't show and I'm the only one who will ever know that it is there.

Murphy 09-02-2011 07:17 PM

Hi and welcome to the board from Iowa. Beautiful quilt.

YES - it's off to jail for you!! While you're gone, please leave the key under the mat so that I can come steal your quilt. (I don't give a darn how you did it -- I just love it).

soniboo 09-02-2011 08:03 PM

Beautiful! :D

QM 09-02-2011 08:21 PM

You don't want to leave the papers in Basting that does not show is stritly your business. anywhere I baste, I only remove it if it interferes with the finished product, making it bunchy or whatever.

As Jennifer said, your quilt, your rules. The only quilt police I know of are show judges. Fleurs de Grand-mère looks very good. Tres bien.

kathy 09-03-2011 03:14 AM

ok, if your basting won't show on the final product we'll let you leave it in since it's your quilt ;-) LOL

My basting thread is holding the paper in so yes I snip the thread and remove the paper to be used again :)

That is what I didn't understand and now I do thanks to all of you who answered my question. You have to take it out if the basting holds the paper. I do mine with freezing paper that I iron on the back and my basting is only in the seam allowance so I can leave it. YES!!

Work in progress. This is the real thing. The picture at the beginning of this topic is my EQ design. Come back in a year or two to see the end result

I can't wait to see the finished quilt. Your hand-work is absolutely fabulous! Let me guess -- winters are looooooooonnnnnnngggg in Quebec!

Very nice. I like the way you are combining GFG with Field of Diamonds. Good job.
