I made this quillow for my daughter when she was in college. I cross stitched her Greek letters in her sorority colors that were visible when folded into the pillow. When unfolded it became a stadium blanket with her name stitched to the opposite side of pillow and the UT on the blanket. The afghan stitch is such a precise grid that it's ideal for cross stitch.

I have read a lot of the posts on here and heard many of you talk about crochet and knitting, but I haven't read any posts about the afghan stitch. It's really easier than either crocheting or knitting, but takes a lot of yarn.

I've never seen this technique before. Is it stitched onto a fabric or is it a crochet stitch?

ddrobins.1956.......here's a website that has very clear instructions on how to make the afghan stitch. The afghan hook is like a cross between a knitting needle (has a button on one end to keep the thread from coming off) and a crochet hook on the other end. I guess the standard length is 14 inches long and they come in different sizes like crochet hooks. I can't find them at Walmart anymore, but there are several listed on eBay, Amazon, etc. and you can probably find them in regular sewing and craft shops.

You'll see once you've crocheted a piece how well it lends itself to cross stitch.

Be sure to look at the home page. I didn't realize other people were cross stitching on the afghan pieces, too. I was just checking last night for a good tutorial...and this tutorial is very clear. Then this morning, I looked at the home page and found the instructions and free patterns to cross stitch to make them look like quilt blocks. Very nice.

When I did the quillow, I just drew my pattern on graph paper trying to fit it to the finished piece. I used the 4-ply yarn, but I'll bet the 2 ply would be much nicer. Hope you enjoy.
