A friend of mine sent me a picture of the quilt I made for her a while ago. It's a large applique (steam-a-seam with blanket stitch) of Asian fabrics that a different friend had brought back for me from Alaska. After I SID-quilted the top along the sashing, I was stumped. So I decided to tack the center squares down using buttons. 168 buttons later.......It really felt like "mending" at that point.

Unique idea, good for you for thinking outside of the box
really neat! I had some buttons on one of my quilts and the silly dog chewed them off.
The boy let him on the bed ;-) |
What a gorgeous quilt! I also used buttons on a quilt and know how you feel!!
How inventive of you. It is beautiful.
Great idea - it came out perfect! Really adds that extra little interest to the whole quilt. Those are some incredibly beautiful fabrics. Hope you saved some for yourself.

Thanks for the nice comments everyone. |
Looks great Mad. Did you sew the buttons on by machine or hand? Hand I would guess from your comment about mending. Wow, that's alot.
Neat quilt - looks like a lot of work!
Such a unique idea. And they look terrific.
Really neat....I have thousands of buttons and will have to try this myself.
I really like that. I used buttons when I made a crazy quilt, but this is a good idea.

Beautiful quilt. Nice touch with the buttons, love the design and the fabric. I admire your fortitude that's a LOT of buttons.

But, will you sew a button on your husband's shirt!
Very inventive, nice result  |

really cute.

Love the pattern. Had to be a LOT of work.
Great idea! That would be something I could do ... for many years, I've been cutting buttons off of clothes that are destined for the garbage or the ragbag, so I have accumulated about a zillion buttons, many of them off uniform shirts, so they are all alike. Also (and this is NOT an afterthought), I love the quilt.
Martina, it's gorgeous! I'd have never thought to use buttons...but I will the next time the opportunity comes up!!
Thanks for sharing that! :) |
Looks just marvelous .. I too love the buttons added. I have some antique buttons, I might have to think of something along the way to incorporate them.
