These are the placemats I've been working on for a friend for Christmas. Just need to bind them and I dread that task. The binding will be the same as the center square.

The only quilting I've done was a table runner and the binding was the worst part of it. Please tell me this can't be as bad as that was! lol
These have been a constant struggle!
They aren't perfect but I think they look ok so far. I sure hope she likes them.

ever consider sewing right sides together, leaving an opening to pull back through - press seams, blind stich opening, then topstitch around mat edge.

This would be the way to go if you simply want to get them done -- NOW!!! 8-)

I agree- for placemats, the easy way is what the other gals already said. I like them better as there isn't a thick binding on the edges and the plates sit flat. Just remember to have the right sides of fabric together and your batting, flannel or whatever you put in middle, either on top or bottom when you stitch!

Great job-LOVE the colors! I have had to learn to enjoy the journey-and that means the binding, too!

The binding is NOT the worst part. Keep saying that!

I made 28 placemats for Christmas gifts, and by the time I got to #28, I thought, "Hey, I'm pretty good at doing these bindings!" Now I think binding is easy. That's what practice will do for you, so keep at it.

I got my grape fabric at a LQS. My girlfriend has pink grapes in her wall border of her kitchen. I had shopped all over looking for pink grapes!! lol It was $ 9.50 a yard but I didn't need much so I got two FQ's.

Our Walmart has some grape fabric and I think JoAnn's does too.

Thank you on both subjects. That dog is my Toby. He's four years old and has one brown and one blue eye. We were told he's a mixture of Huskie, Bassett Hound (LOL he has VERY long legs) and part pit however, we saw a Great Dane this past summer and we are now convinced he is part Dane and Huskie. He was a terrible puppy but he's grown into a very good and loveable dog! :D

that's why we have seam rippers LOL I like the back & think it goes well with the front.

I don't especially the thickness at the edges where the binding is sewn into the seam so I stitch the top and backing right sides together leaving an opening at one end. Then before turning right sides out, I put a bit of glue across the end without the opening and into the corners, lay the batting down on the glue and turn it . The edges are not bulky and so far it has worked well for me. Did the same to mug rugs I made too. Sorry, no pics. Don't know how to from my phone. Duh! Technologically challenged!
