Go Grandma...Go Grandma...Go Grandma!!! I teach kids with Specific Learning Disabilities and many of them have ADD (so do I and so does at least one of my daughters). Kids with ADD will often find one thing to focus on - like the TV - and not even know anyone else is in the room. I'm glad that you gave her something good to focus on. And I agree, you have given her something to boost her self esteem. I'm looking forward to seeing her quilt this summer too - she is making one yes? She MUST!

How very clever to find a way for Amanda to help you. Isn't it wonderful being a grandma with time and patience to teach the grandchildren sewing skills to bring a lifetime of pleasure. Amanda's results are colorful and pleasing to the eye. Thanks for sharing the pattern. I bet you both can hardly wait for summer vacation.

You gave Amamda a life long gift. First gift is your love next is allowing her to do something on her own. ADD persons need to know that they can accomplish a job on their own without being told what they did wrong.
ADD people are very creative, they can see beauty beyond others. You are wonderful Grandmother. |
My son has ADD and he is a talented writer at an advertising agency. He is one of the most creative people I have ever known as well as one of the most appreciative and sweetest. The trick is finding what they love and to focus on it. Love the pillowcases. Beautiful!!

Tell Amanda WAY TO GO!!!! And a pat on the back to you Gramma---My 14 year old grandaughter has ADD also and she likes to do sewing that is quick and fun. When she was in London, England with my son last summer--he taught her how to piece a quilt top and secured the first lines of quilting by machine for her to finish. We are going to be finishing it soon, and then she wants to make some simple things. She is a fabulous drawing artist too. In this day and age, I think kids need their grandparents more than ever with moms and dads working so much. Give her a hug from Katie and me.

you were saying the pattern maker was crazy, not your granddaughter! (I have adhd too). Most add-eers, are very intelligent and like so many here have said, will hyperfocus on something interesting to them. Her story is all too typical and sad. You have shown yourself something, and now can tell her family, but what you did for her?...priceless :XD: |
if there is one thing to teach a youngster, that sewing is the thing... it is so rewarding and i believe that any one who learns and does sew. whehter it be pillowcases or quilts. it is an accomplishment. and that is what young people need to know,,, they can accomplish

Younger folks don't believe me & look at me sideways when I tell them we didn't own a TV until I was 9 yrs old. You did the right thing, in my opinion, by turning the TV off. Your Amanda didn't have the distraction then, she had your attention & your teaching skills. You're the best. The world needs more like you.

That is so very special! My grandma taught me to sew and I loved her dearly for it. Your GD is very lucky to have you to teach her. You both did an awesome job on the pillowcases.

Beautiful! The pillow cases are so fast to put together, and are so useful,............teens and tweens really love them. Am so glad that you pushed to get her interested.......is there a sewing machine in her future?

OK, I'm hooked. What a great gift for the grandkids. Is there a tutorial for the pillowcases? How is the "rolling tube method" done? Even simple directions would help. Judi

thank you everyone!! And Amanda thanks you! We just got back from taking her home (across the mountains). We took the other pillowcases to the other grandchildren (14 down to 5) and they ALL loved them!!! So, yeah, GREAT christmas gift!

that is great. this last Christmas i made pillowcases for my niece and nephews out of different age related material for each. Then I bought new pillows for them and gave them as Christmas presents. They loved them. They take them to there friends house when they sleepover and also in the car on a road trip. Each has their own special one

I know as a Grandma, I want more than anything to have at least my granddaughters learn how to sew and to love to sew. Right now, I only have 2, one is 12 and the other is 2. The 12 year old loves crafts of all sorts and loves to hand stitch everything. You have a lot to be proud of. Continued blessings to you. |
