Two other women and I have been working most of the school year on putting together a "vehicle unit" for our assistive tech department. The idea is speech, OT and PT departments from different schools can check it out and use it for up to one month. We have a big tub full of cars, toys, switches and lessons to go with all. There is everything from patterning with cars, to books about cars, to puzzles about cars. I even wrote a book about a taxi cab, targeting the basic concepts of "in, on, over, under, next to, etc." that is interactive. The kids have to put the taxi where the page says, "over the river" and the taxi attaches with velcro dots. I've used 2 sets of ink cartriges to print all the lessons and stuff in and have 2 3" binders full! One is stuff downloaded off the internet, the other is original lesson plans.
So here is the icing on the cake, so to speak. I made a quilt for the kids to drive the little Match Box cars on. The roads are oversized, I know, but it gives them lots of space for the cars. It's taken way too much time to complete and I'm glad it's done. All of it is applique and all original design. http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...s/IMG_4239.jpg http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...s/IMG_4244.jpg http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...s/IMG_4245.jpg http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...s/IMG_4246.jpg http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...s/IMG_4247.jpg |
I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D :D
You're are amazing. I bet the kids love it--I LOVE IT!!!!! :D :D :D :D I want one in 10 years (maybe 6?) for a grand child. |
It was fun to put together. I only bought the grassy background, the rest is scraps from other projects. I used 2 spools of thread on the stippling. The thread matched the green too well, you can't even see it! I sort of wish I had used a brighter yellow for the center stripes of the road, but that is what I had on hand. (needless to say, I was on a budget.) My favorite part is the little cat tails at the lower edge of the lake. :-)

sandpat,
I don't know if you saw this one or not, http://www.quiltingboard.com/posts/list/4721.page, but I made it for an animal unit. Same idea about the unit, but I wasn't involved in putting the whole unit together. I just did the quilt. M |
Oh! How darling is that??? :D :D :D

What a wonderful idea! I know the kids will love "learning" with it. Kudos to you. Great job.
