Start by "making fabric" - sew strips into 14-inch blocks (this part doesn't have to be perfect; just close to 14 inches). Lay two blocks RST, bottom block with seams running vertically, top block with seams running horizontally. Fun part - sew 1/4" seam completely around the outside (yup completely). Make one cut on the diagonal, corner to corner - don't move the fabric, but realign your ruler and make a second cut again on the diagonal from the opposite corners. You'll have 4 individual blocks. Each block will contain half horizontal & half vertical seams. Sew a matching border around each block; then a second matching border, which should be the same fabric you want to use for the sashing, just to make it match. If you need pictures of the process, I can send those along. Hope you have as much fun with this as I did.

Thank you! The finished size block is (with both borders) is 13 inches.

mrshalibut 10-27-2013 05:04 AM

Susanb,

I saw your picture and your quilt is so fantastic I immediately started making my own! BUT, I thought it was quilt as you go, with the back being the foundation. You must have quilted in the ditch instead? From your description, I understand now how to do the top, but do you have pics of how to join the blocks?
