My sweet, DH bought this for me over the weekend. Well, he had my aunt and uncle to get it for me...
It is a Singer 319W2. It was built between 1955-57. Singer has lost their records for a lot of their machines, and this was one of them, so I cannot get an exact date. They made this tan color, green, and the pretty black ones. The tan isn't a great color, especially compared to the black/gold ones, but I still think it's beautiful. I love it. They didn't make many of these machines because most of the users found them to be complicated. I think this machine was way ahead of its time. It has a thread cutter, several discs/cartridges/cams that you put on front to make it do different stitces, built in levers for different stitches. It does over 60 in all! It does a ton of stuff! This one came with all the different feet in the original box. It works. I was having issues with the lower bobbin, but I think it was my fault. I didn't have it threaded correctly. It has its original owner's manual. I'm looking at the owner's manual thinking this machine has more functions that most average/basic machines have today! The foot pedal is attached inside the cabinet, and you "give it gas" with a lever with your knee. The cabinet has a pull down drawer in front. It's in very nice condition. It wouldn't hurt to be refinished. It also has the stool. The top comes off for storage under it! I guess this machine is really a work horse. I saw a You Tube video with a woman sewing through 5 layers of leather! I've read about how much it can sew at other various places. This is going to be a wonderful addition to my new sewing room that my DH is building me. Remember that? It's getting closer to being finished. We are almost ready to start mudding the drywall. We are focusing on our son's room most, though. He needs it! We have the electric on now! I haven't cleaned it, yet. Isn't it beautiful!? |
Don't you just love that little oil bottle??
|
WOOHOO!!!
Love it! The cabinet is perfect! |
I didn't realize just how much it really matched my house until I saw the pictures. It's slightly darker in person. It must've been the flash that lightened it.

Terri, the cabinet sold me! I was unsure of the machine...what kind/brand/type, but I had to have the cabinet. Lucky me got an awesome machine, too.
I saw the cabinet online, with the machine out of sight...this was for a local auction that my aunt and uncle attended. I told my DH that I LOVED that! Even if the machine was junk, I could use the cabinet for one of mine...turns out, the "new" machine gets to keep its place! Funny thing is that most machines we've seen sell online, the buyers don't care about the cabinet, they just want the machine. I would think it would hold more value in the original cabinet. |
I have my grandmothers Singer (electric) with original cabinet. My Moms Singer Touch N Sew with original cabinet. It actually has the larger cabinet because that is what Mom wanted. I also have a New Home that was given to me with a cabinet. I figure even if I don't use the machines, at least they have nice cabinets for me to display things on, right?

To the non-sewer, I would guess they would think this new one is just a pretty side table or vanity. |
My Grandmothers Singer is a side table in my bedroom. :)

A great machine!!!

I love old singers! This one is gorgeous! You're going to love it! My mom's 1952 Singer is still at my Dad's so I use it there. I have a Touch and Sew that belonged to my Aunt that is in a beautiful case and I have a 1978 or '79 Singer that my hubbie bought me back then. Love them all! I still would like to have a featherweight and a treadle!

Love it.

What a find! I love to see these old machines finding homes where they will be put to work. It's too bad sewing machines are not so well made anymore. I love my Bernina, but I doubt if it will be still going strong in 50 years.
|
Congrats! It looks somewhat like the one my mom had (sister has it now) but it doesn't have cams.

THis machine takes a 206x13 needle. Swing needle. They are shorter than most regular needles. I would like size 14. Anyone know where to get them? AllBrands has them, but they are on backorder, and that is for 100 needles/$49.
One site wanted $10 to ship 5 or 10 needles... Any suggestions of places you get hard to find needles? |
Very nice! Congrats!

The foot control is easy to take out and put on the floor. If it's like my old Singer it's a foot control slipped into a slot underneath the cabinet. I like the knee control much better then the floor. Only thing is if you are use to using a machine with auto knee lift, things can get interesting. :D

I really do like the knee control. I'd never tried one like that before. |
I use to have a button foot pedal on my Kenmore and asked at a local machine repair shop...cause the button would stick...and they looked it up in the parts book and found a newer style and it works great. At least the machine doesn't sew my itself any more....thought it was hexed.

What a treasure!!! Can't wait to see it in your new sewing room :D :D :D

The 319W was Singers answer to an "industrial" domestic. It is a work horse and can do all sorts of nice stitches.
I had one I found on CL Mobile but when my niece went to pick it up for me her MIL was with her and went bonkers when she saw it. She had lost the one she received as a wedding gift to a house fire so I told her that she could have it. It was super clean and was only used to sew a set of curtains when the lady bought it new. Easy come, easy go.... When it comes time for you to clean the machine up use Go-Jo non pumice hand cleaner and lots of cotton balls and Q-tips. It takes a while but the results are phenomenal, then you can use a good carnuba automotive wax to polish it. Congratulations on your new old machine!!! Billy |
Congratulations! I know you will love it and your husband was so sweet to get it for you.
|
Thanks, ladies!
Lostn51, that was very sweet of you. I would've done the same, though. I have seen them on eBay, if you are still looking for one. |
I am going to hold off until I find one around here. I mainly own treadles and I will always go to one of them before and electric, but my wish list is steadily growing and there are quite a few emachines on it.
Now go have some fun and make something to show off!!! :D Billy |
I put the machine back in the cabinet last night for the first time since I got it. I was going to put it in my room, but there is NO room left in there.
I'm working on a wall hanging for Halloween, but I've been using one of my other machines for it. I did start on a small quilted square with some of the embroidery stitches it will do. I was thinking of turning it into a small wall hanging for my new sewing room. I have a treadle, but it has a broken piece in it...MacGuyver broke it trying to free it up. He says he's going to fix it, but I haven't pushed him. He's building a sewing room, so...I'll let him work. |
