My great grandmother pieced this quilt in the 1930s in Indiana. I am now hoping to finish it but would like to have more information before I begin. If anyone recognizes it, I would be deeply appreciative.

On pg. 3 of "849 Traditional Patchwork Patterns" by Susan Winter Mills it is called Box and Star. Hope this helps you. It is a beautiful quilt and a treasure to have.

Carrie 04-04-2010 03:40 AM

Hi again--Also found the pattern in Maggie Malone's book "5500 Quilt Block Designs" on pg. 350. It has several names to numerous to list.

oldswimmer 04-04-2010 04:41 AM

Oh my, don't you just love that 3o's green? I wonder if there is a good reproduciton of that color.

Great looking quilt. What a treasure. It will be a loving expereince and connection to grt grandmother when you are working on that! How fun.

raptureready 04-04-2010 05:03 AM

It's also known as Garden Star. As with most older blocks it has several names.

sewjoyce 04-04-2010 05:21 AM

keepsakequilting.com has about the best selection of 30's repro solids that I've seen. I have mixed them with both repros and original feedsacks, and they match very well.

Beautiful quilt...you are so luck to have this connection with a family member.

shopbelt 04-04-2010 07:26 AM

No idea, but I like it!

RedGarnet222 04-04-2010 07:50 AM

I went upstairs and looked in one of my very old pattern books and it is closest to the Bethlehem star because it has the hexagon center. Which was almost exact to this block. A search on line resulted with the closest I could see was a star of david block.
My grandmother also made one like this. It is very interesting isn't it? I think like someone else said, it depends on which area you come from what the name of it is.

CoriAmD 04-04-2010 07:54 AM

It sure is pretty! What a treasure you have there! Would love to see a photo of the entire quilt once you finish it. :)

beachlady 04-04-2010 08:40 AM

What a treasure! Memories too.

Tippy 04-04-2010 08:40 AM

I've also seen it call Missouri Daisy somewhere..lol

SUSAN 04-04-2010 08:43 AM

PRETTY!! I have no idea on a name though, so I'd just call it PRETTY!!

craftybear 04-04-2010 09:17 AM

Wow, love the quilt, thanks for sharing!

nlcondit 04-04-2010 09:50 AM

Thank you all for the wonderful advice and sources to follow-up on. I will certainly post a picture when it is finished but it may take a while as I am very new to this.

nlcondit 04-04-2010 09:51 AM

The picture is very true to the green. And a nice match to the blinds in my spare bedroom completely by chance.

ENJOY..... :-D

I just finished reading the article and ran up to get one of the other two quilts I have that she did. Same sorts of colours but this one is hexagons in the entirety and has the hexagonal edges mentioned in the article! It is so nice to know more about all of these things I have. (sorry the colour and background aren't a goo but it is evening and there is very poor light in my bedroom so I had to resort to the kitchen)

Ditter43 04-04-2010 12:33 PM

What a treasure!! Thanks for sharing it with us! Please show it again after you finish it!!

studio-christine 04-04-2010 07:38 PM

Judy Martin calls it "Texas Star"

quiltingruthie 04-05-2010 09:27 AM

Reminds of a form of Grandmothers Flower Garden but have no idea if that even comes close to what your pattern is. :)

Jingle 04-05-2010 10:24 AM

It is very pretty.

bykate 04-05-2010 10:54 AM

That pattern is called morning star and in Texas we call it a Texas star. Kate

ejpkam 04-05-2010 10:59 AM

what a treasure and a legacy!

Trish 04-05-2010 12:04 PM

It looks like SEVEN SISTERS.

KatFish 04-05-2010 03:59 PM

Beautiful quilt! I have always known it as texas star pattern.

zz-pd 04-05-2010 05:37 PM

that is so neat. sorry I can not help you. Penny

galatotesa 04-05-2010 06:16 PM

This pattern could be 7 sisters.6 diamond shapes making a star plus a center star. The center hexagon is probably appliqued on. These diamond shaped pieces could also make tumbling blocks.

flybreit 04-05-2010 08:26 PM

Very nice! What a treasure. Enjoy working on it and thinking of your great grandmother. Don't forget your label!!

I'm getting ready to add (very gently) a label to a grandmother's flower garden quilt made by my grandmother pre-1950 (had to ask my aunt when my gm quit quilting). Someday my kids will care to know that. :-)

skpkatydid 04-05-2010 09:17 PM

What a lovely "gift" from your great grandmother.

ottermomDebbie 04-05-2010 10:48 PM

The book cover looks like a match for your pattern ~if I can only find the book at garage sale prices!
