It's because of the bias edges.

Here's a .pdf of the pattern - maybe that will help you.
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B5sh...MGc/edit?pli=1

You need to be very careful once you cut the blocks - try to minimize any stretch to the edges and press very gently.
Once they're stretched, you've got bubbles.

I would suggest you starch the strip sets BEFORE you cut the blocks.
That should help keep the squares square.

Here's a direct link to Shontelle's post on her blog:
http://englandstreet.blogspot.com/20...l-pattern.html

In the 4th paragraph there is a link to the Google Doc.
Hopefully you can get there by that route.

Thank you will try to get it to work in the morning

As I take everything out down to single squares can anyone tell me how do I make each square the same so everything will line up I have over 150 of these single square which four of these squares make up the larger square. I would hate to have to start all over.

Only thing I can come up is make each square the same size and put a boarder around each square then sew all squares all together. And then try to do this pattern again at a later date.

Pictures are always helpful.

If, however, your squares are already cut, and depending upon how stretched out of shape they are, it's not a lot of fun trying to get all the diagonals to match when joining blocks together, and keeping it all square.

So, are you sure you've cut them all the same size?
Are you pinning the intersections before joining the blocks?

And, sure, you could always put a border around each block, square up all the blocks to the same size, and then join them together.
You lose the design as presented in the quilt, but maybe using a variety of fabrics to border the squares, you get a different looking one.

Or you could join, say, 12 blocks together, press and starch those to lie flat, border that piece, and use that as a building block in the quilt.

Again, hard to say without seeing a picture showing the condition of the blocks.

omgtimmcgraw 01-30-2013 05:27 PM

Well I I know they at not all the same size only cause I didn't have the instructions you shared with me. I will take several photos and post then in the picture section. Just be prepared to be shocked its bad.

MTS 01-30-2013 05:29 PM

Post the pictures on this thread.
Don't start a new one.

fyi - the Picture section is to show off a finished project, or one in progress, although there is a lot of overlap.
You can most certainly post the pictures related to this thread here in the Main Section.

And I'm glad you were finally able to print off the pdf of the directions

I posted the pictures after I read your response

Yeah.

Nice fabrics.

Were the strips from a purchased Jelly Roll or did you cut them yourselves?

At this point it doesn't matter how things went wonky because you can't undo it.
Possible that the strips weren't cut correctly, or the seam allowance used to sew them together was too wide or thin - could be from many causes.

What happens if you join like squares in a row?
iow, they all have the solid brown, but what if you took the brown/yellow blocks and sewed them in a row or into a big square?
Would the strips them line up?
You create a different pattern.

I'm thinking/hoping that perhaps since they were cut from the same strip set, they'll align more easily.

Let me draw something up for you.

omgtimmcgraw 01-30-2013 06:10 PM

I bought the jelly rolls at big lots. So it was precut for me. I sewed them together like it showed. The solid brown I bought and cut my self. I think I messed up when I did the 45 degree cut I didn't have any real directions I even went out and bought the same kind of ruler as I saw in. The video.

I'm fairly new so bare with me! Are you matching up your seams? Are they pressed in opposite directions? Those are just two things I know have thrown my blocks off a lot! I love your fabric choice! I didn't know big lots sold fabric! Hugs I know how frustrating it is to put so much work into cutting the fabric and sewing it and then it not work! The video you are watching is from Missouri quilt company they have a forum someone there might be able to help you to on their website.

omgtimmcgraw 01-30-2013 06:29 PM

I did press all my seams the. Ironed it all flat. Haven't master the direction of the seams. I am a lot better than I have been. I am new at this. This is the first time I am trying to follow instructions.

Here are two versions/suggestions - just trying to use the blocks and still end up with something visually pleasing.

#1- How it could look if you sewed like blocks together - you could sash each section, or make horizontal or vertical wave patterns.
That's IF the blocks can go together relatively easy

#2 - this is with a thin sashing between the blocks - reminds me a bit of a tudor ceiling pattern.

Thank you very much you have been a big help. I will see if the first one will work. If not on to plan B. thank you again.

GirlLivingForJesus 01-30-2013 07:44 PM

I really hope you can make something you like! I think it is the seams not being pressed the right ways, I'm sorry I don't live close to help you I live on the other side of the country ;) I'm a beginner too well I've been sewing for about 7 months now, and joined a quilting club and the ladies there have taught me so much!

omgtimmcgraw 01-30-2013 07:53 PM

I am gonna try to join one out here too wait til I get back from my brothers wedding and check some out. Just need to find someone in Vegas to teach me I do better with hands on teaching.
