Ok, here is my first rag quilt from flannel with Warm and Natural batting (won't do THAT again!) Learned alot from doing it plus the suggestions I had on the board (after I finished 1/2 of it!) I am really upset though-I washed the fabric in just a quick wash
before cutting, using 2 color-catchers. I did wash the white flannel separately. Then, washed it after completing it to make the rag seams and make it soft and cuddly. I put in 2 more color catchers, and the purple/lavender bled onto the white squares!! I used Oxy rub-on stain remover, added 2 more color catcher sheets and re-washed it. Stains still there. I am really upset, as I want to give it to her tomorrow before I leave for my trip overseas. Also, for some reason, the quilt looks like it is really old. Aunt Pam is nearly 90, and I am giving my Uncle Bob his fishing quilt for his 93rd birthday tomorrow, and decided I should give Pam one too so she won't feel left out. The flannel was good quality Quilter's Flannel, so I would have thought this wouldn't happen! This is my 25 (almost 26) year old 6"4" son holding it.

That turned out really pretty! I love rag quilts...but the ones with the batting in between ARE A REAL PAIN IN THE BUTT! LOL! I use three layers of flannel instead, then they are all cut to the same size and you are not trying to piece with the batting in there. It makes the "frills" alot better too. You did a fantastic job on this one!

It's so pretty. I have yet to make a rag quilt but they are wonderful snuggley quilts.

Still beautiful. Doesn't look faded here. She will love it.

Your rag quilt is very pretty! I am sure your aunt will love it!

I might make a suggestion for the next time you make one...you can use warm and natural batting (I always do) but you need to cut it smaller than your flannel pieces. So if you are planning on 1/2 inch seams on say a 6 inch block, you would cut the batting as a 5 inch square and center it between the flannel pieces. You will achieve a nicer 'raggedy' look by not having the batting as part of the seam.
