Beautiful. I have that pattern and the moose. Have yet to make either of them. I didn't get the kits, just the patterns, so have been collecting fabric for each.

I bought the moose first, a couple of years ago, and put off making it because I had no experience with the technique. Then one of the LQS had a class, and the bear was one of the patterns we could use for the class, so I bought it. The whole thing turned out to be much easier than I thought it would be. If I had just jumped in and made it I wouldn't have needed the class! If you don't cut exactly on the line or line up the fabric quite right - it really doesn't matter! I pulled all the fabric from my stash, which the way I like to do it.

Absolutely beautiful! I want to reach out and pet it! Question, please. I know raw-edge applique is when the edges are not turned under. When you do a project like this--making a picture out of many pieces of fabric--do you sew around the pieces or just fuse them on? I've been wondering this, as I never can see any stitching around the pieces.

wvdek 08-24-2011 07:38 AM

That's amazing.
Can't wait to see the moose.

I stitched around the pieces on the longarm. Some people satin stitch on a DSM. My pieces were definitely not stuck down well enough to even consider not stitching them. I used steam-a-seam-lite. I don't know if a different fusible (or a heavier hand on the iron) might mean that you don't need to stitch the pieces down, but actually the stitching adds to the design so I think I would stitch anyway.

I hope you enter this in the State Fair so I can come see it. I was debating on whether to go this year but seeing this and maybe having a chance to see it just might sway me into going. Good Job Jan

KLO 08-24-2011 09:50 AM

Don't you just love Bigfork Bay patterns? I just picked up three myself .... two horses and on eagle. Cannot wait to get started. You bear is scary and awesome!!! The eyes are fantastic.

mshawii 08-24-2011 09:53 AM

I would try a pressing sheet and go over it all now that you have it stitched down. My guess is that you were light on the ironing for fear of scorching it . It is gorgeous and can hardly wait to see the moose! I have done a McKenna Ryan piece and it fused down okay. Jan

Most fusibles are not permanent and need to be stitched down. Also some of the fusible glue is absorbed into the fused piece and with the light fusibles will not stick well or long.

I'm not planning on entering anything in the State Fair, but I will be displaying this and other quilts at my guild's quilt show October 8-9 in Lebanon. Come down for that instead!

luvspaper 08-24-2011 12:06 PM

Absolutely stunning! If I look at the individual fabrics, I never would have thought to pick them. But together, all I have to say is WOW!
