I was in the mood to make bags this week and then the news had an item about charging for plastic bags at the markets. So I got busy. I had some old fabric given to me so I went to town to be prepared the next time I shop....

Those are nice bags. Must be Bag Season... Joann's has/had Simplicity patterns on sale for 99 cents so I got 6 handbag patterns and, of course, each one has several variations.

I'm in the process of making the first one for my daughter.

Love your bags -- especially the blue one :-)

leona07 04-16-2009 02:30 PM

Very cute bags!!! Seattle is going to charge for plastic bags too!! I have purchased a couple, and I am crocheting some too!!

My questions is what the heck am I going to use for cleaning out the kitty box with if I don't have the plastic grocery bags anymore!!!???

tlrnhi 04-16-2009 02:39 PM

Great job! Cute!

Butterfli19 04-16-2009 02:48 PM

Very cute! Somewhere recently I read to make them using home dec fabric - sturdier. I suppose you could also use tapestry for something unique.

ButtercreamCakeArtist 04-16-2009 02:49 PM

Very cute. I hope to make some, eventually. ;D

jbsstrawberry 04-16-2009 03:24 PM

Those are very nice!! I love the daisey one...I had a dress made of VERY similiar fabric that mom made me when I was little!

Debbie1 04-16-2009 03:38 PM

Your bags are so cute!

sandpat 04-16-2009 03:46 PM

This puts me into a panic all by itself!!

I can't pick a favorite they are both great!! Good for you, now you just have to get in the habit of taking them with you and taking them in the store. That was the hardest part for me :( then remember to take them back out to the car when you unload them.

judee0624 04-16-2009 05:00 PM

You are right,Sharon. I am having a hard time remembering them so I need to put them in the FRONT seat when I shop. With these, I can keep a good supply in the car.

:D :D :D You caught me, Lisa! These fabrics were from a very old stash, but you can't be that old, can you??? LOL

judee0624 04-16-2009 05:02 PM

Yes, these fabrics are a heavier weight than quilting cotton. The home decor stuff is great for these bags.

Great job! I made one and was given one free from the supermarket. Now if I can just remember to take the with me!

RedGarnet222 04-16-2009 05:41 PM

Oh aren't those colorful! Very nice judee.

Gosh does anyone remember when we used to crochet with the wonder bread plastic bags that you cut into strips? They were open weave kinda like the old market bags from long ago.

I am thinking to try and find some tent type fabric so they will be lighter weight and I can stuff them easier into a small size to carry. I have some tote bags in my car now. They are much heavier than the tent plastic ones I want to make. I think they call it rip-stop??

littlehud 04-16-2009 06:39 PM

You are going green in style. Great job.

Machel 04-16-2009 06:45 PM

Very cute and Green. They look great.

Marcia 04-16-2009 07:11 PM

Those are so cute---they might actually make grocery shopping fun!!

Moonpi 04-16-2009 07:34 PM

I keep a couple small boxes - one in the trunk of the car, one in the kitchen. When I go shopping, if I forget to bring some, I use the ones in the trunk. When I get home, I replace the trunk box with the one in the kitchen.

amma 04-16-2009 07:56 PM

Those are so cute!!! I love them, they are so handy and make it easier hauling heavier items :D :D I hated it when I was half way up the stairs and the canned food bag would split open :x :x

beezee54 04-16-2009 08:02 PM

love the bag especially the daisy one :-)

sunnyhope 04-17-2009 01:52 PM

what pattern do you use to make your bags?
they are really cute

judee0624 04-17-2009 05:21 PM

There are a variety of patterns out there for green bags. Just Google Grocery Bag patterns and you will find loads. I ended up making my own. Very simple.

Enjoy!

Those are really cute!!!!

Darlene 04-23-2009 11:42 AM

You'll still be able to buy small plastic bags like Glad.

amma 04-23-2009 02:15 PM

I cut apart a brown paper bag and used it for a pattern :D :D :D

Quilt4u 04-23-2009 02:16 PM

Very nice.

When I was in Italy, visiting my son and family, I discovered that they have always had to pay for their bags if they don't bring their own with them. As soon as I got back home, I set to work making them a bunch of bags in various prints I had on hand. Most of them were from Joann's deco remnants. Now my d.i.l. says she even uses them for diaper bags, beach bags, etc. Next time I go over I'm going to add some interior pockets to a couple of them which I didn't think of before. I'm going to make a few for me, too. The last person I ever think of ... LOL 8)

Isn't that so true? I say the same thing, "oh, I have to make that for my daughter" or "oh, my son would love that" or "oh, I bet my mother would like that." I very rarely think to make something for me.... lol

tlrnhi 04-23-2009 03:56 PM

You mean to say we can MAKE OURSELVES SOMETHING????
Wow! What an idea!
