The Big Bang
1 Attachment(s)
This is the first whole cloth quilt I have ever made, but the concept has been rattling around in my brain for 4-5 years now. I kept putting it off because I knew I didn't have the skills yet to attempt this project. And in fact I did change the mode; I had originally thought about trying to piece something for this, and just recently changed my mind to doing a thread-based project. I call it the Big Bang because I'm visualizing color exploding out of blackness. To that end, I utilized reverse applique with the white bursting through the black from behind. I had to really work on my threadwork to make it show. I ended up buying a mini-suede material for the black because I loved the depth to the material, but then had to deal with its effects on my stitching. Some of the colors show up better than others. I also had to vary stitch length to different purposes; longer stitches for single lines, shortened stitches for maneuverability but then I would trace over the lines multiple times. I also incorporated bead work for my first time, trying to give another pop of color to the piece. She measures 35"x29". While I was sure that no matter what I did, it wouldn't ever match up to the picture in my brain, I'm quite pleased with the effect! Hope you enjoy looking too.
