Binding isn't Scary after all!!

The first few quilts I made i used the "fold over" method, bringing the backing to the front and stitching it down. Some of the binding tutorials I watched made it look so hard!

I finally broke down and spent a few days researching different techniques and put a few together to try it.

The result didn't turn out half bad! The corners even look somewhat mitered.

Looks great. What technique did you finally use?

gabeway 08-14-2014 04:35 AM

Great job! I love finishing up the binding by hand.

Stitchnripper 08-14-2014 04:36 AM

Nice job! I never have minded bindings. I can't get the hang of the fold over method though!

:thumbup:Nice binding.

Glad you're finding it easier now. Bindings give your quilt the finished look..... good or bad. Yours looks good.

I remember struggling with the binding the first few times i did it - now i can't remember why i thought it was so hard. It's one of those things that once you get it, you really get it.
Yours look MUCH better than my first attempts for sure !!!

Great job, and great going - to tackle something that you thought was difficult.
Often something looks difficult and then when you take it step by step, it's not so bad!
(I should tell myself that again about "Y" seams - I avoid them at all costs!)

Eleanor Burns has an easy way to miter your corners when you bind with the backing. I always use this way as it is easy and very smooth. http://www.quiltinaday.com/theater/2800Series/2813.html

I always have one corner on every quilt that the mitre does come out right. LOL. Your quilt is terrific!

It is a nice job and I have the same problem with fold over - I tried it a couple of times and the results were terrible.

Texas_Sue 08-16-2014 04:26 AM

Good job! The binding is the only part of the quilt that I put off until I just have to get it done!

Looking good, and I agree, easy.

Very pretty !

Your binding looks wonderful. I just did my first ever straight grain binding. It is not as difficult as I thought it would be. I originally was taught to do bias binding and just thought straight grain would twist and fight with me. I am glad to know that others are experimenting too. Keep it up!

heather1949 08-16-2014 08:31 PM

That is the best way to just try things for yourself, and you will find the easy way for you.

Abuelita 08-18-2014 12:50 PM

I watched a tutorial on binding from the Missouri Star Quilt Company - she makes it look so easy and after a couple of attempts I was able to duplicate her method - now I wouldn't do it any other way! I make baby quilts for "Babies in Need" a local organization and now I can whip them out in no time at all and the binding always looks great!
