I finally tackled my very first OBW. I had always looked at them and really wanted to do one. So some how I purchased 3 different materials to make more of them. This is the first one for me and it was alot easier then I expected. I promised to post it when I finished it, so here is the top. Now just to quilt it, any ideas?
Thanks for looking. Original Fabric Finished Top |

They aren't as hard as they look. there were no y seams so that was nice. I was thinking about adding the cubes but I didn't want to add that on the first one. If I think of it tonight I'll take pictures of the other fabrics that I have for OBWs. I'm excited for the one... no one at the LQS saw how it would be a OBW then I showed them in using the mirror and we all loved it.

If you're not quite up to trying the OBW pattern, I would suggest trying the Four Patch Posie pattern first. It's much the same preparation you only are using squares. It makes for a nice outcome. After doing the 4 patch you'll then feel like you can tackle the OBW. Pam M |

I wish the fabric i choose had more colour variation but it's good for my first one. here is the fabrics i have picked out for the next ones.
its not photographing well but it is a really nice teal colour with black and white in it. the 3rd option |
Looking at this again, and trying to figure out why I like it so much more than a lot of other OBWs. These characteristics seem key:
1. The spacing between the key elements (in this case, flowers) allows for ease of "eye" as well as variety. 2. The thin black line connecting the elements across the "blank" space creates wonderful connecting elements in the results, adding to the overall design. 3. Lastly (and at least for me, possibly most importantly) the minimal # of colors keeps the results from being too busy. Makes it quite interesting to look at. |
