Blooming Nine Patch DONE
 

I am trying this post again...sorry if its a duplicate.....

I finally finished my Blooming 9 Patch! This was a challenge and all of the members started with the same fabric in the center. The rest of the fabrics, including the backing all came from my stash. I quilted it on my long arm and used Sharon Schambers method of binding, which didnt work too well with my double fold bias binding (hence the wavy spot on left side) which will need some re-work, but for now I am just HAPPY DANCING and sleeping very well under my 2nd finish of 2014.

It sure looks good to me and only you know where the questionable blocks are that are in question.

this is only one of two quilts I've made in 40+ years that I'd enjoy doing again. Amazing how they turn out.
Mine all came from stash also so no matchy bits, which doesn't matter on this quilt!

I actually "auditioned" about 16 fabrics total before I chose the 11 that went into the quilt. I say just start with one and pull the next and the next. The way you construct this quilt is to make a 9 patch out of 2 fabrics and then you follow it with a round of squares of one of those 2 fabrics. Your choices determine the bloom or not. I had a couple of fabrics that I thought would work but when I cut and made the first couple of blocks with them rejected and rechoose something else. I laid the strips out on a large cookie sheet and walked by them in my kitchen for few weeks just glancing as I went by and that helped me to choose. I want to do another one! I would say dive in and start. Its a fun quilt to make and much easier than it looks!

Sharon sews her binding onto the back of the quilt and then wraps to the front, using a very fine line of Elmers glue and a hot dry iron to secure it until you can stitch it down by machine. I think this would work very well with straight grain binding, but the next time I use bias binding, I will stitch from the front and hand stitch it down in the back. I just didnt like how flat is was and I wasnt careful enough when putting the binding to front to keep it even between front and back. So I had to "pull" some of it apart on the left side and that of course, stretched the binding. The photo was taken after I washed and dried it, so it was still a bit damp. But you are absolutely correct, its not noticeable when on the bed and my dogs wont say a word :D

I love your quilt! I posted my first blooming 9 patch earlier this month, and I also want to make another. One of the fun things about this quilt is that you really don't know what you will have until it is finished.

You might be able to fix the binding ruffling problem by blocking the quilt.
