I bought a layer cake that I thought I was going to love, but it turned out I only loved about 12 of the pieces. So I searched and found a pattern I thought might work with just those 12. It is called Treasure Amidst the Bric-a-Brack, from a book called Mystery Quilts by Rita Fishel. I think it turned out well.

Let me see if I can remember how to post a picture. It has been a while...

Great job in using the well loved pieces. Don't you just hate that when you can't see the whole layer cake and the top one is the eye catching one? Luckily a few web sites now give you a thumbnail of the entire line which gives you a better idea of the contents. I love your graphic quilt.

That turned out so beautiful. Glad you found a pattern that worked for you and the fabrics works well with that pattern

Homespun 09-10-2020 06:32 AM

That is beautiful!

The quilt is lovely! Great save.

Blue-tiful!

It’s a pretty quilt. Layer cakes usually don’t work for me because of the squares in the pack I don’t like. The blue surprises me since you love purple!

Sneed 09-10-2020 07:34 AM

Very well done. I love your fabric placement.

ekuw 09-10-2020 07:48 AM

It did turn out well. That's a great pattern for a layer cake. Whoever gets that one will love it too!

That turned out great.
Good job on finding a pattern that worked for you.

.

You have a good memory! I do normally only use purple. I just love purple. My last four quilts have not been purple....but my next four will be. :) I strayed off the path for a while...but it was temporary. :)

Looks totally intentional.

Great quilt with the fabrics you loved. Life is too short to mess around with ugly fabric, huh?

ckcowl 09-10-2020 12:40 PM

I love the way that turned out. Great use of color. Great quilt

Great job with the layer cake. I like the pattern you used to show the pretty squares. I remember that layer cake. Yes, there were some un-loved squares.

Cheshirepat 09-10-2020 05:28 PM

I think I know that fabric - is it Dragonfly Dance? I bought one too...but I still haven't decided what to do with them. I *love* your solution, it's gorgeous!

Yes, I think that the layer cake was called Dragonfly Dance. Some of the colors just didn't please me at all, but the squares I loved, I loved. This pattern only needed 12, but there were about 22 that I just loved. So I made some tough decisions...:) I was going to make a Double Slice Layer Cake pattern (Missouri Star) , which I think would have looked good, if I had liked more of the colors. I know you will figure out something fun to do with your layer cake.

That's so pretty!!

Pretty quilt. If you make scrappy quilts you could use the other cakes in them. Just using a bunch of colors and designs together.

I agree, not all of the colors are fabulous, but I'm hoping to come up with something that will have small enough pieces that it blends together! It was the dragonfly pattern that got me, I have a special fondness for them. :)

That turned out fantastic. Lovely colors.

I love the intertwining of the knots this quilt is beautiful. Well done for a layer cake that you only loved about half of!Thanks for sharing this wonderful quilt.

jmoore 09-12-2020 08:10 AM

Wonderful colors and great pattern. I’ve had the same experience with a layer cake where some of the prints/colors didn’t appeal to me.

Pennyhal 09-12-2020 10:30 AM

What a great quilt! I'm sure that if you ever get lemons, you'd turn them into lemonade!

I just bought my first precuts. Some layer cakes and jelly rolls. I was disappointed in that there was a ton of dark/black fabrics and very few lights. They were brown-ish, orange-ish fall colors. And, out of the blue, there was a pink calico fabric! Go figure.

I bought a small book, only 4"x6", called: Quilting with Precuts. I got it on Amazon. It gives you charts as to how many of each precut you'll need to make a block using the sizes precuts come in. It also has a several common block pattens with directions on how many of what size precut you'll need. It's handy to have around.
