I am working on a quilt for my DB & SIL. It has a real farm theme and I can't decide on what to do for borders. I am probably adding two (2" & 4", or something similiar) I had a few fabrics in mind when I started but am not sure that any of them are right. I wonder if they are carrying the farm theme a little too far and I should be looking for something completely different. This is making a queen size quilt, but my picture is only of one corner and then pictures with 6 different border possibilities. Please give me your honest thoughts about the pictured fabrics or ideas for something else that you see working with this pattern. Thanks, Lori

I like t he plaid. It stands out after the brown sashing. Looks nice. I might attempt the windowbox one day. I'm still getting my feet wet. Luck.

I would try the red Farmall fabric for the first border, then the outer border with the haybales or wheat fabric. The larger prints are too busy, and your eyes need a place to rest 'cause there is so much to see!

Neat looking quilt!!

I love the fabrics you found.

I prefer the "straw" (I think - or is it ripe grain?) - tannish gold fabric, and the darker brown bale fabric.

Those two colors represent the "harvest" part of farming to me and would make the quilt look more "adult" to me.

The other fabrics would make quilt look more "kiddish" to me.

I like the stacked hay

Neat looking quilt!!

Me too!
I'd add a bit of red too and then frame it again in a brown.
Hope you will post when it is done! Anxious to see the whole thing.

I think I'd go with either of the tan fabrics. The quilt is fairly busy with a lot to look at and the straw bales or the wheat will give it a calm border. Try your pictures from a distance too. Sometimes just seeing it from a distance in a picture can help make the decision for you.

I like the plaid in the first pic.. and I like the haybales.
Very cute !!!

I like the first 2 ( the tan and red Farmall ones. (not a biased opinion becaused I'm retired from Deere)

I think this is a great idea. I do like the hay bales.

Hi Lori- I think one of the wheat/grains would set the quilt off very nicely. I also think the others are a bit much. Like someone else said- the eyes need a restful spot. But I also think the quilt would pop with plainer borders. It's so cute!!!!!!!!!! :D

My favorites: Red Fsrmall and haybales. I agree with many of the others. I'd go with narrow red, wider bales and then the brown sashing for binding. What a collection!

I think if she was going to do a narrow red border the Farmall fabric would be a waste. It's a mid size print and the narrow border should only be half an inch to an inch because red is fairly intense. I would just use a Moda marble for a very narrow red border.

wow, I love your quilt, have fun!

My thoughts too!! Love the quilt so far!

I'd just casually ask them what their favorite colors are (without showing them the quilt or fabrics), or what color their room is decorated in. Then I'd pick something out of my border choices to go with that color.

I like the Red Farmall print. It makes the red pop on all the blocks. I notice each of the seperate pictures in the windows. Pretty quilt.

bearisgray 06-02-2010 07:58 AM

I like the idea of keeping the border fairly "quiet" because of all there is to look at in each of the "windows."

MamaBear61 06-02-2010 08:29 AM

Oops I double posted again  I seem to be doing that alot today

MamaBear61 06-02-2010 08:29 AM

I think the fact that the quilt is so busy, is why I am having a hard time making the border decision. It is 7X9 8" blocks and therefore there are alot of windows to look "through". This is probably a quilt that should have stayed lap size, but I decided that I wanted to make them a bed quilt. I think my brother will really like it and my sister-in-law will think it is fine too although I know that she probably won't be as excited to have a quilt full of tractor pictures. I know that this quilt will only have appeal to certain people, my brother just happens to be one of them. It seems that something red and then probably the bales is leading the voting so far.

skavanau 06-02-2010 08:30 AM

I like the farmall in the yellow background..

MNQuilter 06-02-2010 08:45 AM

I like the plaid pattern and my other thought was maybe a bandana pattern fabric in red. It kind of stays withthe theme without screaming "farm!"

canmitch1971 06-02-2010 09:05 AM

My fav is the hay bales!

I like the hay!

wesing 06-02-2010 04:52 PM

I like the wheat (outside) and the plaid tractors (inside). Then you could bind with the red. I don't think you can carry the theme too far.

I'd do a thin row of straw and then one of the ones that has red in it for the outer border.
