Bowling theme quilt...
1 Attachment(s)
Hi all,
I had been asked about a bowling theme quilt I made for a dear friend, she will be 92 in December...Back in the 60's she was quite the bowler, and had pics along with all of her patches and pins she was awarded...I asked her if I could borrow all of it for a "project"...I then brought it all home and designed this quilt as a surprise for her...I loved seeing her face when I took it over to her! I did not put any of her pins on the quilt, but I did leave plenty of space for her to pick and choose where she wanted to pin them...Also, dh cut out 2 wooden bowling pins, and we hung the quilt using those and a dowel...I need to get better pics of it all, as I took this pic with my phone, had to send it to my son and have him e-mail it to me ( I don't have a "smart" phone...lol..) Its hard to see, but I did quilt bowling pin outlines in the bowling pin fabrics... Sorry for the grain-i-ness of this pic, but here it is: Kif |
What a nice tribute to your friend. A couple of years ago I made my dad a quilt out of his old bowling shirts. He had it with him at Hospice when he died and I was surprised to find it displayed next to his casket at the funeral. My SIL arranged for that without telling me. I kept it afterwards.

How special!! I was a bowler from about age 10, both parents big into it. I was in many leagues over the years, but after moving overseas and back again, I have no ideal where all my awards are! What a great idea to use them this way. Gives me the idea I should make a quilt with a billiards theme, as my son has a drawer full of patches. All his plaques are going up on the wall in his man cave ( garage he divided and carpeted, moved a sofa and love seat out there, and an old tv, and of course, his pool table!! He has been in leagues for several years and plays nearly every day. Thanks for sharing!

As quilters isn't it wonderful that we can make themed quilts for our friends and family so they have a nice way to display thier momentos. You did a great job on her quilt.

Thanks for the kind words, all! I really wish I could get the hang of doing fmq...I start to do it, then end up reverting back to hand quilting or straight outline quilting...I honestly had no idea of what to do to make her a quilt for all of her bowling stuff...so I just drew out some ideas...I know its a far cry from an award winning quilt...but I made it with love, and she is so sweet that I had a great time making it for her! She is an amazing lady, and at almost 92, I think she would still bowl if her knees would allow it!! I actually met her when she was one of my home health patients a few years back, we just "clicked" and now she has become a part of our family...
