Boy, Oh Boy, Did I Get Lucky!

1 Attachment(s)
Last night I cleared off the dining room table so that I could sandwich and spray baste a tree skirt that is to be a gift. My game plan is to quilt it today, bind it tomorrow, and wrap and gift it on Sunday. So I spread, smoothed, and sprayed, trying to get everything just so. After finishing, I left the quilt on the table, but pushed the chairs away so that my Shih Tzus wouldn't be tempted to get on the table to investigate. (Ask me how I know to do this!!)

this morning, still foggy-eyed with sleep, I trudged into the kitchen to make coffee and discovered that the Great Dane had decided to taste test my quilt!

Looks like maybe he didn't like all of it. According to what little is on the floor. BTW looks great so far.

jeanne49 12-10-2014 07:53 AM

At least he didn't take a taste from the middle. It's amazing what dogs will eat.

Mariposa 12-10-2014 07:55 AM

Whew! That was a close one!

lynnie 12-10-2014 07:57 AM

tree skirt looks great so far.
Maybe the basting stuff tasted good to him, maybe bacon flavored.
At least he didn't eat the whole thing. then you'd have more problems on your hands.
Maybe he's trying to tell you not to give it away, he wants it. silly puppies!

MFord 12-10-2014 09:09 AM

I sure hope no one is making bacon flavored basting spray! My husband will eat it all!

Seriously, that was a close one - looks like you still have enough room to trim and bind the piece. Better feed those dogs before bedtime!!

Annaquilts 12-10-2014 09:16 AM

It is good he didn't seem to like it. Only one place and not too bad. He hit batting only!

QuiltnNan 12-10-2014 09:37 AM

i'd be worried that he would become sick with batting stuck in his gut

FabStripper 12-10-2014 09:39 AM

Oh I bet you were just stunned. Dogs can be our best friends but so stinking stupid at the same time. At least your's heard that little voice in his head that was telling him to stop right there. Better the batting then the can of spray baste. Your tree skirt will be beautiful and looks like after you catch your breath you can get it done. Good morning!

Jordan 12-10-2014 09:50 AM

You are very lucky--can't say so much for the doggie if they get sick! Maybe he didn't like the taste! Looks like it is going to be a very pretty piece.

RainyBC 12-10-2014 10:02 AM

For some odd reason, dogs seem to be attracted to quilt batting. My little Shih Tzu loves it. I don't think she actually consumes it but loves to tear it apart. Fortunately for you your fur baby chose the right spot to sample your quilt. I hope you show the finished project.

QuiltE 12-10-2014 10:07 AM

Oh dear!!!!

.............. he obviously heard you had made a sandwich! :D

KwiltyKahy 12-10-2014 10:08 AM

Looks to me like the dog got lucky. At least he didn't do any damage to anything that counted.

Doggramma 12-10-2014 01:50 PM

Well that was rude! At least he stopped after one big bite.

I've had 5 danes over the years and they'll eat anything on the table ...butter, cake, etc. He must be a puppy to just touch the side. Best of luck with your schedule. Nice tree skirt.

Kitty10628 12-10-2014 07:32 PM

Thats how my table looks right now. Quilt back with the batting and the spray baste can.

I had to leave for dinner and was a little worried about it and talked myself out of worrying....

Then I see your picture!!!

BizzieLizzie 12-11-2014 03:49 AM

I feel what you feel! My dog did the same to a quilt that I was working on a few years ago and I had to put it aside for a long time before I could take it out and repair it. Yes, I know that feeling...What's comforting about your tree skirt injury is that it is not the tree skirt itself that is damaged and you have the scope to complete the tree skirt without too much hassle? It is a beautiful tree skirt and thank goodness it is still intact. Best wishes, :) Naughty baby! (To your Great Dane! LOL)

Too funny!

Baloonatic 12-11-2014 09:18 AM

Oh no! But maybe you shouldn't blame the Great Dane after viewing this You Tube post... :

Dogs are smart!! But not as smart as cats. Except for Haley. She's more porcine than feline.

knitquiltbake 12-11-2014 09:33 AM

my dog also likes to nibble on batting and yarn, anything made from natural fibers and he is interested!

woodyandjake 12-11-2014 09:37 AM

So funny but your dogs must look like Mutt & Jeff together, one very large and one very small. We have a Shiz Tzu as well.

Pennyhal 12-11-2014 11:42 AM

I was hand quilting on a small frame and I thought my puppies were sleeping...until I discovered that they were on the floor under the quilt removing the batting. I don't know what it is about batting, but dogs really seem to like it. At least your Great Dane didn't try to eat the fabric...at least not yet...

ManiacQuilter2 12-11-2014 12:25 PM

YES, you did get very lucky. Dogs are so much like children but it is so hard to guess what next trouble they will find.

WMUTeach 12-12-2014 04:25 AM

Dogs are man's best friend, Repeat, Dogs are man's best friend, Repeat....... And you my dear are a luck duck!

twinkie 12-12-2014 05:45 AM

You are right, you did get lucky.

callen 12-12-2014 05:59 AM

Lucky is an understatement. My Golden Retriever decided to eat 1/2 of my Bacardi Rum Cake one year at Christmas time (it was a little to close to the edge of the table) when we went out for a few minutes. That was nothing compared to
what you would have felt if your GD had gotten to the middle of your quilt !!!

EmiliasNana 12-12-2014 06:44 AM

Boy, can I relate. We have TWO Golden puppies that are almost 7 months old. They can reach anything, are curious beyond belief and are very food motivated AND they are still puppies. We have them in classes, use a personal trainer once a week and they are very well behaved, however, they are still puppies and lose their minds occasionally. I have my sewing room gated off for that very reason. Too many things they can destroy, or can destroy them. They will grow up, they will grow up, they will grow up LOL

Living with cats and their problem of not being able to spit anything but pills out of their mouths, let me gently suggest that you keep an eye on what goes into and comes out of that Great Dane.

If the dog ate what seems like a significant volume of the tree skirt, you might consider giving your vet a call and asking what to do to "help things along." I can tell you that cats CAN safely take stool softeners. But, that's cats and your vet would absolutely be the place to ask technical questions. Mine has been together with us so long he doesn't turn a hair at off the wall questions on the phone.

Since I do not want to risk offending, let me wish you a Happy New Year a bit early.

Dogs will be dogs...Good think it was not tasty...

joyful1 12-19-2014 04:12 PM

Sure glad he didn't eat any of the center! Looks great so far.
