The quilt will not go to anyone. It will stay at our local Hospice House as a Passage Quilt. What this means is that a body will be covered with it, as it goes thru the hallways (passages) of the hospce residence. The family/friends follow the gurney with the body, to the entrance of the home, for an informal farewell gathering before the body is put into the hearse. The quilt is then folded, and given back to the HH staff to return and be used in the future.

The next time they see their loved one will be after preparation for the funeral viewing (if that's their plans).

This will be one of a few that they have. I have committed to make a second one, more "man'ish". I'm thinking of some blues, and possibly an Irish Chain pattern.

The pattern is one I put together, and I've been calling it "Double Rose Trellis" because of the double lattice effect. When I decided to make this Hospice Quilt, I decided the butterfly fabric that I had leftover would work for the centres to let them fly around amidst the trellis.

The gist of it the pattern is a square piece of fabric with one of each of the 4 lattice strips around the edge. The first is sewn on with a partial seam, then the other three added around the square, and then the partial finished off. This gives you the lattice effect when all the blocks are put together. You could do it in whatever sizes you want ... I used 6-1/2" squares and 2" wide strips (unfinished for both) for the butterflies and a little larger for the original quilt.

It really is an easy-peasy technique ... almost to the point of boredom!

Such a gorgeous quilt. It would certainly touch my soul if I was in need. We used Home Hospice when my husband died of cancer and they are a wonderful group of people who do so much good.
