I actually think it's called courthouse steps though in some books regarded as log cabin. Happy sewing! Therese

Courthouse Step is a variation of a Log Cabin block.

The blocks have same sized logs on opposite sides of the block, unlike a traditional LC block.

They both are similar but a log cabin is made adding strips counter clockwise, so each strip is longer as you go, where courthouse steps are strips sewn on opposite sides of the center block which makes the stair step effect.

I have 3D folded blocks by Geesie Baron &Esther Vermeer this block is called Gemstones which is a variation of log cabin makes a challenging project for beginners.

Without a doubt log cabin! Look at how it's sewed. There's only one strip as long as the center square. Then the strips keep building as they go around. They're just not using any contrast.
