I'm trying to make my friend a "girlie" baby quilt and using stash fabrics because we don't have any $ to buy fabric right now. So I'm doing the rail fence pattern and it looks really cute... but does it look "girlie" and "baby" enough? I guess if it doesn't look babyish enough it's no biggie cuz then she can use it longer... but be honest, what do ya'll think? should I keep going? I haven't pieced the top yet, the blocks are sitting there next to each other but not sewn yet.

Often baby blankets are stark white (not my idea of "cute")... yours has colors and patterns that will interest a baby. It's great!

I like "non-traditional" baby quilts so they can use them as toddlers and for awhile after that without having to be babied about them.
Looking good so far. |
Go for it. It has flowers so it is girly enough. It looks happy and some what classic because of the colors.

Keep going! It doesn't look real girlie yet, but you could "girlie it up" by adding scalloped borders!
Please show us again when you are finished! |
I'm not fond of baby quilts in pastels, so this is much more according to my taste. So I don't see why this shouldn't be a baby quilt. I'm not one for rigid definitions and gender attribution like only pastels for babies, blueish for boys and pinkish for girls. On the contrary, I'd strive to break those rules and especially think out of the gender box when making a baby quilt.

awesome! thanks so much everyone! I'll piece it together tomorrow night. man this top is coming together so fast with my "new" singer 201. she stitches so straight I don't have to worry about the blocks being right, they all measure up for quick trimming because she is so accurate! Yay! Love my Singer :)

I saw a post from someone else who makes baby quilts in more grown-up colors so they can be appreciated longer. I have to say, I never thought of it before, but it's a great idea! Go with it!

I agree, keep going. If you want to make it more girlish, add an applique when the top is done. I have done that with teddies, Sunbonnet Sue etc. Or, you might have a border that makes it feel better to you. The comforter my Gramma made me had sailors all over it and I loved it. Don't worry too much. It will be loved.
