Can someone identify this applique pattern?

The quilt blocks were started by my GGM, worked on by my GM and now I have loads of unfinished pieces that I'm going to complete for more blocks so that I can make a total of three 5-generation quilts for my two daughters and my nephew. I've tried to find the name of them. They're not like the Sunbonnet Sue that I've seen and someone told me that it's just called Flower Girl but I can't find any pictures of finished quilts with applique squares that are even remotely similar to this. I want the completed quilts to be authentic to the period of when they were started, probably back in the mid to late 1800's. Any help or direction of where to look will be greatly appreciated. Also, if you know of any pictures, please let me know. I'm not even sure of what you put between these types of blocks.

wish i knew the name of it... what a treasure to have!

Sorry, I can not help with the name but I would scan the block into the computer. Then I would print it out and trace the pattern onto another piece of paper. Then you have a pattern to follow!!
Hope this helps!! |
Looks like a variation on sunbonnet sue

It looks like a combo of Sunbonnet Sue and Crinoline lady to me.

No clue here, very cute. You could sash them together 2 - 2-1/2" strips. You are so lucky to get them.

I've seen this design named both Sunbonnet Sue and Flower Girl. In the Quilt Index, there are 3 quilts made with your design. http://www.quiltindex.org/search.php
For the 3 quilts, fill in the Quiltmaker and Date boxes with the following: Turley 1930 Hooper 1940 Eddy 1930 Also, do a Pattern Search on Sunbonnet Sue. I'll think you'll be delighted with all the sashing and non-sashing possibilities. Quilters then were just as creative as quilters now. Hopefully, you'll discover the perfect solution for your blocks. |
Wow! Thanks KarenK for the link to the quilt index. What a great site. The Turley 1930 and Eddy 1930 are this same pattern as mine. I liked the Turley version where the backing for the applique and the other plain blocks look like the same fabric and is just quilted in a crosshatch grid. My oldest daughter wants the only color on her quilt to be the color in the dresses/hats. I was afraid it would look kind of bland but the Turley quilt is beautiful. Now if I can just find muslin the same color as what I already have in the blocks that were already made. Thanks for your help!
