Hi all,
I am relatively new to quilting, so I don't know a lot about older patterns, appliques, etc. I went to an auction last year, the woman who passed away was 94 years old and a lifelong quilter. I got a ton of vintage fabrics from her, including about 25 Sunbonnet Sues, all put together and turned under. I also got about a hundred of the leaf/flower petal cut-outs and hundreds and hundreds of these strips. Does anyone know what the leaf cut-outs are for, or what I could use them for? And the strips are a heavy canvas type fabric, cotton, but heavier than the usual quilting fabric. They are wider on one end and they taper to the other end.

Can anyone give me any idea of what these were for? Thanks much in advance,
Nancy

Daisy flowers and perhaps a stem? Were there any green petal/leaf fabrics for leaves on the stem?

I'm not sure about the weight of the fabric though, unless she was just using what she had available. That was done a LOT.

The triangle strips and odd shaped pieces may have been cuttings (left-overs) from a clothing factory.

At one time, sometimes they were discarded, and people could get them.

the leaves could be appliqued on in a pleasing arrangement around a quilt border

If the strips are canvas you could sew them together and make tote bags with them.

Ah, thank you for your suggestions. The smaller pieces do look like leaves, but they are not green, so I though maybe petals? And the strips would make nice strong tote bags, for groceries, etc. Thanks!!!

I bet the petals were made for flower applique.... since u said she had turned sunbonnet Sues....

I recall about that time my grandmother used to make " balls" out of simular shaped petals...

Hi Bluteddi,
Can you tell me what kind of balls? Thanks,
Nancy

I wouldn't make balls from those leaves. They look like feedsack prints. I think if you took muslin background & arranged them nicely they would be beautiful.

i had left over "petals" when cutting out drunkards path blocks and made this quilt.
you could make "happy daisy" quilt blocks out of them.
