Candle mat

I pinned my hexagons together and liked the look that 9 gave instead of 10. I machine sewed the joins and hand sewed the different angles for a new look. A great way to use up old Christmas prints.

Another interesting variation.

sewlittletime 08-08-2016 11:14 PM

Very very nice

ManiacQuilter2 08-09-2016 02:19 AM

You selected a great stripe and used an interesting decorative stitching to make this candle mat come out beautiful!

Geri B 08-09-2016 03:11 AM

Great idea...do you have instructions somewhere? If so I missed, can you redirect?

QUILTNMO 08-09-2016 03:50 AM

very pretty!!!

Raggiemom 08-09-2016 04:35 AM
Great idea...do you have instructions somewhere? If so I missed, can you redirect?[/QUOTE I would have done a picture tutorial but I figured it would get deleted by moderator. Basically I made 10 hexagon mug rugs and pinned them together until I liked how they looked. I settled on using 9 and am using the extra for a mug rug.

I really like it. Love the color choices

tartan--- gotcha! Thanks...I'll go from there! Size of one side of outside hex?

My finished side measurement is 3-1/2 inches but I hand drew my hexagons. A hexagon ruler for cutting would have made it a lot easier.

oksewglad 08-09-2016 08:34 AM

Very clever...did you use a batting filler or in-r-form at all?

Tartan 08-09-2016 08:54 AM

I would have used my Hobbs fusible quilt batt but since I was out, I cut my striped fabric hexagon and used a washable glue stick to glue it to a regular thin cotton batt. I ironed it dry and then rotary cut the batt to the hexagon size. I pieced the 1 inch red border on after that like a regular hexagon border. I did not put any batt under the 1 inch strip because I figured it would turn better and the edges didn't need the bulk. I then layered right sides together with the backing fabric and stitched around the edge leaving a small opening on one straight edge for turning.

Good work.

I have seen so many of this, but I like yours because the ends are not pointed. The colors are perfect too.

It looks great. Love the accent of the red stitching. It shows it up.

BrendaK 08-09-2016 04:51 PM

I have the pattern for the hexagon but haven't made one yet. I have been making the pointed ones. guess it's time I did a hexi. My husband said he really likes yours. BrendaK

I made one of these . They are a lot of fun to make. I love yours being a Christmas themed one. It's very pretty. Mine is more summertime or fall. They look so different, depending on what fabrics are chosen. I love yours.:D

One of the prettiest ones yet - altho it's fun to see all the different variations. I'm working on a hexie now for Halloween.

I really like your candle mat Tartan and it is on my "to - do " list. I made the mistake of trying to help someone who kindly asked about details. I didn't have a pattern - but worked it out myself by just looking at a photo of one and the instructions were VERY different to the pattern - which I then purchased. I had a blunt reply from a fellow member and immediately asked the Moderator to delete my post. It was thought there was no problem - but it was removed at my request. I was only trying to help and it brought me down to earth with a bit of a jolt. It made me feel terrible and a lesson learnt. Here is a link to the pattern -

lawsonmugs 08-10-2016 10:38 AM

Oh Dotty that's so sad. Mine is made from the poorhouse pattern I bought. I made one of the first type fold and sew wreaths from squares and it really wasn't that hard to make. So many had problems with the pattern. When I made that one I made a square with a border not applique like the pattern. I posted on here then also. I didn't think I was hurting anyone. Sure didn't mean to. Most of us just try to help each other.

gramquilter2 08-10-2016 03:11 PM

Like how you did this one.

MargeD 08-10-2016 04:16 PM
