I like the second one with a beautiful quilted motif in the solid blocks.

Great block! Your son and DDIL are lucky! I like #2, because it makes the eye move around the quilt. I would use the light background for the 'blank' blocks instead of the tan, IMHO. Also, I'd use the tan sashing of #1. The quilting design is lovely. Much better than 'in the ditch.' And the 'blank' squares will really show off the quilting.
