Carolina Rose is an old Amish quilt pattern, Carolina lily looks very much the same.
Charleston, South Carolina is supposedly where the pattern started, although North Carolina claims it as well.
Seems the base is either a "flower pot" or a stem. It has been called other names, like flower pot, peony, tulip.
