Last summer my friend gave me the bright colored squares in this quilt and told me to try to do something with them. After looking at them I discovered I had the black/blue and the blue from the same line in my stash. This is what I came up with. I've had this ready to quilt for quite a while and decided to finish it last night. I quilted it diagonally through the black squares and blanket stitched around the fishes. I'll put a label on it and give it to the NICU where our GS is. Jackson's been moved up to the next level so gaining everyday.

I really love it when your stash has the right fabric to finish a quilt. Nice quilt too.

TY! Finished size is 35 x 39--beginning squares were 3". I contacted the Charlotte Quilt Guild via their website in regards to sizes they made for the NICU. (Our GS was given one from their organization.) There's usually are 35 x 45 to cover the unit.

watterstide 07-29-2011 07:44 AM

wow, that is big for the nicu! but i can see what you mean, by putting it over the top of the unit!

we make them for the ones that don't make it..12 x 12.

TY and every else! When I finished the top it looked okay, but lacked some pizzaz. To me the fabric read tropical found some fishies to applique and off I went.

Glad to hear your GS is a fighter and is starting to pull through. Hope he gets strong enough to make it home soon!

I also made some little flannel ones about 24 x 24 for use as "utility" blankets. DS and DIL says it's quite colorful in NICU with all bright quilts atop the units. The quilts help shade tender eyes and darker quilts let less light shine through. I've also learned that red and black are a good color combination as it allows the babies to focus. I washed the blankets in "free" detergent and packed in ziplocs right away.

24 x 24 sounds like a good size to make! i will bet it looks great seeing all the colors in the room! great idea something small and quick to make. to donate to them.

i think the fish are just darling!

I'm finishing up another scrappy that I started, but think I will give that to Ronald McDonald instead as it's quite a bit wider and longer that the 36 x 45. The 36 x 45 makes good use of a yard of fabric.

exactly, especially for the backs! for kids/babies only,i like to use a fancy prints for the back..that matches.
