Chaos Introspection

3 Attachment(s)
Years ago I made eight "Hole-in-the-Barn-Door" blocks. I didn't like how they turned out, and they have been sitting in my orphan-block drawer for years. I decided to make them into disappearing blocks by cutting them up and rearranging them. I liked them better that way.

I wanted to put them together in a quilt, but I needed one more block for the center. I took a "Wacky Face" class at my guild. I decided that the face I made would make a good center for my disappearing blocks.

I just finished the quilt and named it Chaos Introspection. That poor girl in the middle of the quilt is trying to make sense of all the chaos surrounding her. LOL!

The face block is very nice!

Your first quilt was nice, but the remake is fabulous.

Cool quilt! I would never have thought of cutting the original bl9cks and rearranging them that way.

What a great solution for blocks you were feeling "meh" about! I love your finish - so creative!

well done!
I used to send orphan blocks to a friend in New Hampshire, but recently I've been repourposeing them into my have a hug hearts. very satisfying :)

I hope you put that in a show someplace for everyone to enjoy the story ( and the quilt!)

Great job Jenn and Kalama with your repurposing!!!

Jenn -- that quilt is a blue ribbon winner I suspect. I hope you enter it in a show somewhere, as Quiltmom2 suggested!

A very creative repurposing of blocks. Your story made me smile and i love the result! You are very creative!

That is a GREAT quilt!. I love the "cut" blocks. Nice job on the center block/face too. Projects like this that feed creativity are my favorite.

What a great idea to cut up those blocks that you weren't happy with. I agree with you that the disappearing blocks are much nicer than the originals, and I love your face block and the striped flange. Very clever.

I always admire quilts made with orphan blocks. Yours is stunning. I bet that face workshop was interesting.

I liked the original blocks but LOVE them cut and rearranged even more. Great place for the face block and the title is perfect.

Great save for those blocks. Love the face.

You are right to turn blah into WOW! The blocks are so much more interesting now. I also like the black and white to link it altogether. However the woman’s face is the cream of the crop! The eyes are amazing! I don’t understand how it was accomplished but you sure aced that class.
Going back to the blocks, did you cut it like you would a disappearing 9 patch?

Yes, the blocks were cut exactly like a disappearing nine-patch... and I cheated on the eyes. I found some eyes that I liked on Pinterest and printed them out on the injet printable fabric that I use to make my labels. That wasn't taught in the class. I saw something similar on a "The Quilt Show" program. I had a bunch of leftover black and white check fabric that I wanted to use up, and it added a nice punch.

I love your solution. The black and white sashing. It really sets off the blocks.

Thanks for getting back to me about the cutting. I love this ‘work of art’. Beautiful finish. I had to show my sister and a friend today what you started with and your finish. Very impressive.

Your hopes have been answered. I just received a letter that said "We are pleased to inform you that the jury has selected Chaos Introspection to be judged and displayed in the quilt competition at the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival from February 26 - March 1, 2026." :)

What a c creative idea on the repurpose. I never would have come up with that idea, and they look amazing. Love the story, I too think you should enter this in a show or local fair with your creative story. Well done.👏

I like it. Well done!

effika 01-30-2026 06:59 PM

Fantastic! It's like she is floating with the blocks around her.
