You'll have to look closely, but here is the example you asked for. It is the same top stitching you are already doing, except that it goes across the edge of the border on the front of the quilt (after I have machine stitched said border to the back). This stitch is a rather simple one as I was working with pretty busy fabric.

Here's an example of a binding I finished today.

Nope, not at all, I use decorative stitches sometimes on my quilts too.

Hey guys,
That's what I thought the decorative stitches were for. To be used!
Tonee White does primitive quilts with fusible applique and just kinda zig-zag's around the edges - not satin stitch - and it looks great.
Michelle Watts from Alburquerque, NM doesn't like to do hand embroidery - so she uses her triple stitch and it looks great.
Last week on Sewing with Nancy her guest did thread painting using 'distorted' fancy stitches and it looked great.
There is no such thing as cheating.
There is such a thing as being creative and inventive!

The way I figure it is that if it enhances your quilt and you like the look, there's no such thing as cheating! Looks great on this quilt--good choice!

Candace and Sewtinker - those look wonderful! I usually don't like to hand stitch my bindings on the back (although I found this last one rather enjoyable) so I might just give that a try. :) Thanks for sharing the pics.

The more the merrier. No......it's not cheating!

I was wondering though - is there any reason (besides it being too easy) that quilters don't use decorative stitches more? Does it not hold as well?

Funny you should bring this up.... :) I used my decorative stitches today, too.... here is what I did.... the star in the middle is embroidered though... I used my fancy stitches on the binding part and around the white blocks... I had fun using them... :)

I'm glad this isn't cheating since I do it myself!

That is designing, and as most everyone said that is why the stitches were put into the machine - WE wanted to use them!!! LOL And it doesn't take as long as if doing it by hand (which I do love to do on small projects)

That looks adorable. There is no such word as cheating when you are designing with decorative stitches.

The stitches generally hold very well and if you do your math before - hand, you don't have to worry about the corners because the pattern will fit exactly and be placed where you want it to go.Not every quilt 'tells' you to cover it with elaborate stitches and sometimes 'less is more'.

Nope, not cheating. I use them as often as I can in my doll quilts and hangings. I belive it can enhance the project.

Berta48 09-26-2010 11:18 PM

I understand that there are no quilt police!:)

I just used decorative stitches on a table runner yesterday.Looks grrrreat!!!

heather1949 09-26-2010 11:21 PM

Looks good to me, might try it myself.

Juliebelle 09-27-2010 03:41 AM

not cheating and it looks really good, if your machine does fancy stitches then there is nothing wrong with using them. My machine does it too and I have used them

waquilter 09-27-2010 06:10 PM

How cool! I never thought of using them for quilting.

So what kind of thread did you use?
